Jardel back in business

Beira-Mar 2-2 D. Aves

It was a goal fest at the Municipal Stadium in Aveiro, as Beira-Mar and Desportivo das Aves played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Aves opened the goal scoring soon after the kick-off as Hernani was left unmarked when he took a pass from Jocivalter and danced his way around Beira-Mar goalkeeper, Todor, to put the visitors one goal up.

Beira-Mar equalised just before half-time, in the 39th minute, when Jardel opened his goal-scoring account with a typically clinical header from a corner kick, that crashed into the back of the net.

In the 53rd minute Aves were reduced to 10 men when Sergio Carvalho picked up two yellow cards in the space of five minutes.

No other goals were scored until the last 10 minutes of the game when Vasco Matos put the home side ahead following a goalmouth scramble.

The victory looked to be sealed for Beira-Mar, but Aves had other ideas as substitute, Anilton, headed the ball into the net from a corner in the 87th minute to make the final score 2-2.

Beira-Mar coach, Augusto Inacio, was not pleased with his team’s performance, but accepted the draw as a fair result.

“I liked parts of he game, but others I did not like at all. I did not like the way we started the game and I warned my players all week that if we lost the ball in the midfield, it would be fatal.”

“We got better when we switched tactics, but it wasn’t enough to win. I accept the draw because of our bad start, but what is obvious is that I am not happy with the result for the season’s first match.”

Aves coach, Neca, enjoyed the way his team entered he game, but felt they could have won it, despite being one man down in the second half.

“We started the game well, with a big will to reach the opposition’s net. During this period we had opportunities to kill the game. If we had been bolder, we could have gone into half time leading.”

“The expulsion of Sergio Carvalho was an excessive decision, and made us change our system. Yet with 10 players we still drew level and I felt that we still could have won.”
