Benfica snap up star Argentinian duo

Eagles beat Arsenal to signature of U20 star Angel Di Maria

Angel Di Maria

Benfica have acted quickly in an attempt to appease angry fans after the sale of Simao Sabrosa to Atletico Madrid by announcing the capture of Argentinians, Angel Di Maria and Andres Diaz from Rosario Central.

The club wasted little time in contracting the two players, paying a combined fee of six million euros. It is believed that Benfica purchased 80% of Di Maria’s rights and 50% of Diaz’s.

Di Maria shone for Argentina in the recent U20 World Cup in Canada as the South Americans claimed their sixth title. The crafty forward scored three goals, including a cracker against Chile in the semi-finals, and set up two others.

Coup

The signing is something of a coup for the Eagles as it was believed that Arsenal had already arranged a deal with the left winger’s club and were looking to loan him to Salamanca, in Spain, while trying to earn him a work permit. But the 19-year-old opted to sign for 5 years for Benfica and is scheduled to arrive in Lisbon tomorrow.

Less is known about the compatriot Andres Diaz. He burst onto the scene for in 2004, but after a stellar season, the player was afflicted with personal problems, even leaving the game for a month to resolve his off-field issues.

The 24-year-old played intermittently last season, and is looking to resurrect his career. A utility man, Diaz can play in various positions across the midfield.

Belletti loan deal

Benfica are also reported to have struck a deal with Barcelona to take right-back Belletti on loan for the upcoming season. The Brazilian has not seen much playing time since he joined the Blaugrauna in 2004. His moment of glory came in the Champions League final in 2006 when he scored the winning goal against Arsenal.

Turning to injury news, Moreira’s worst fears were realised after it was confirmed that the goalkeeper would miss four months of action due to his knee surgery. Benfica have called up Bruno Costa from their junior ranks to fill the hole.
