Karagounis says reluctant goodbye to Benfica

Santos seeking two more signings before season starts

Karagounis

Greek international, Giorgios Karagounis, has officially rescinded his contract with Benfica as communicated by coach Fernando Santos. The Greek international leaves the Lisbon club owing to family problems.

During the team’s second pre-season training session this morning Santos confessed that the player is no longer part of the squad, although both player and club were reluctant to part ways.

“He has left! Now we must find an alternative,” bemoaned Santos. “It’s a loss to be without a player who wanted to be at the club and was motivated to stay. We are now lacking a midfielder - one who can play box to box.”

Santos went on to add that the team requires another striker in order to complete the squad, but would not say if he was hanging his hopes on Miccoli returning to the Estadio da Luz. “This matter is being handled by Benfica SAD. I am not making any predictions.”

Finally, the coach also touched upon the subject of disgruntled central defender, Anderson. The Brazilian has made his feelings public that he has not enjoyed playing out of position, although he stopped short of handing in a transfer request.

“He has said everything he needed to say in the newspapers,” said Santos. “He must find a solution with the club’s directors. I have laid out a work plan, but whoever wants to leave must be handled by the board of directors.” If Anderson does decide to move on Santos will surely want a replacement as soon as possible.
