Benfica Champions League post-mortem

Failure or dawn of a bright future?

For a few minutes last Wednesday evening the Estadio da Luz was buzzing with energy, firstly from the fine performance that so narrowly failed to defeat reigning European champions AC Milan, and secondly from the prospect of Benfica going to Shakhtar Donetsk for the final group game still with a chance of qualifying for the last 16 of the competition.

That was before the news came through of Massimo Donati’s last-gasp goal in Glasgow which put Milan through and eliminated the Eagles, leaving them with the prospect of winning in the Ukraine just to manage the consolation prize of a UEFA Cup place.

Fast forward a week and it’s mission accomplished. Benfica – replete with head warmers – pulled off a considerable coup by winning, relatively comfortably, in sub-zero conditions against a Shakhtar side who not only would have made the knockout stages of the Champions League had they won the match, but who looked so impressive when winning in Lisbon back in the second group game.

There were hugs among the Portuguese, and quiet satisfaction, at the final whistle, but no outright jubilation.

Camacho regret

Cut to Jose Antonio Camacho in the press room and you could get a sense of why that was. Camacho lamented that ‘none’ of his side’s opponents in the group had been superior to them, and he looked back particularly on the away game with Celtic as an opportunity missed.

It’s not hard to see his point – they certainly had the chances in Glasgow, just as they had against Shakhtar back at the Luz, with the two goal hero in Donetsk, Oscar Cardozo, being more than a little culpable on both occasions.

Despite having largely conquered the goalscoring difficulties that plagued the opening weeks of their season, Benfica again failed to make their domination tell against Milan last week. Missing chances was ultimately the story of their Champions League campaign.

That said, there are a lot of positives that Camacho can take from the campaign. Over the space of just a few months Camacho has developed a young, hungry squad – a known strength of his from his first spell in Lisbon – who are improving rapidly. Players on the periphery at the start, like Cardozo, Freddy Adu and Augustin Binya (despite his red card against Celtic) are coming into their own.

In fact, the side that gave Gattuso, Seedorf and friends the run-around last week are virtually unrecognisable from the players who were given a lesson at the San Siro in the first group match.

So what’s your view? Did Benfica do as well as could be expected in a tough group, or should they be going through to the last 16 instead of Celtic? Give your opinion using the form below.

I'm not convinced Celtic have better players than Benfica, so it has to be a failure not to finish ahead of the Scots. Yes there is some inexperience in the squad but there are also players like Luisao, Petit, Katsouranis, Rui Costa and Nuno Gomes who know the game inside out. I say they were the second best team in the group so going into the final game in last place was a failure. Maybe if Camacho had come in a few weeks earlier the damage done by the hapless Santos would have been restricted.

If the group stage started with the second Milan game, Benfica would surely advance - possibly even at the top of the group. The team is coming together superbly. The young players are getting more and more time and contributing at a great level. The veterans need to maintain their form though. Nuno Gomes has been a disappointment. I'd like to see him coming off the bench more and more minutes for Cardozo, Adu, and Di Maria. I think they will do superbly in the UEFA and Portuguese Cups though.

Benfica should have qualified easily..but obviously didnt. There should be no excuses from Camacho.
Agree that nuno gomes is past it 7 i dont know why camacho persists with him.(maybe politica)...we have talent in cardozo ,adu & di maria..who frankly need to be given more game time. But where are the young portuguese stars..the future is in our youth.

Would've, should've, could've, but didn't. Benfica can't say things like "oh, if we only scored at that opportunity" or "if this or that happened," the fact of the matter is is that it didn't. You don't make good on your chances, you pay for it. It's as simple as that. Benfica could be a lot better than they are and it's a shame they're not. I think the club needs better organization in the front office and 2-3 quality players in order to put them over the edge. The fact that Rui Costa is the team's best player says something. Di Maria, Adu and David Luiz all have great potential, but it's hard to ask players so young to win a championship when they've never won one themselves at the professional level. FORCA SLB!!!

Benfica should be progressing instead of Celtic. Benfica should have beaten Shakhtar at home and tied Celtic in Glasgow. Problem with Benfica is not $$ anymore. Its the lack of developing young players in their system and keeping great players like Simao and Miccoli. With all the facilities and fan support that Benfica has, they should at least make it to the Champions League knockout stages every year from now on.

Im a Benfica fan and Benfica did not deserve to qualify. Nuno Gomes is pathetic as the forward and he needs to go. I like what Camacho is doing in Benfica and I could possibly see us winning the UEFA CUP.

i believe benfica sucks ass. Porto is a far better team overall. There is stability everywhere in that them. Sporting definetely was a bigger disappointment than benfica. Sporting could have made it through if they didnt screw up with roma at home. They lost because of an own goal and that cost them. In the man utd game, they had a 19 year old in the net, who knows if they had stoikjevic in goal he made have saved the freekick. Benfica... their best player is 35... I respect rui costa but its time for benfica to move on. Rui costa is not the one to blame. If benfica wants to move forward... PLAY GOOD from the start,... dont wait till the end. Overall, porto capitalized, sporting was just unlucky, and benfica... was good at the end. It doesnt really matter what anyone says because the standings prove what i say. Porto has a chance to move on...benfica dont.

my point is sporting was a bigger dissappointment then benfica

This is not the year for Benfica. We need some stability with the coaches. I hope Camacho will stay. It may be too late to sell Numo Gomes, but hopefully the young players will continue their promising developement. As a USA and Benfica fan I would love to see Adu develop into a world-class midfielder, and see Benfica make a lot of money selling him to a wealthy club.

Where Benfica missed their chance was Shakhtar at home. They should have won that and they would be through. Celtic and Benfica are pretty evenly matched it should in this group and at the last go round. I agree sell N.Gomes while you can get something for him.

Celtic were far better than Benfica at Celtic Park and should have won by more. As for Binya, it's best I don't say what I think about him on this site... I like your country and enjoyed my trip to Lisbon again despite the result. Last year we were a bit lucky to finish above you but this year we deserved it.

Good luck to Benfica for the rest of the season in Portugal and in the UEFA Cup!

I do not agree with Camacho. We only beat Celtic in the final second at the Luz and after a good start we were bad in Glasgow and were not near scoring in the second half. But I think the team has good potential. Di Maria, David Luiz, Rodriquez & Cardozo can become great players but not this year. We have to not sale them.

Benfica are much better than Celtic but need another good striker and right defender. Nelson may be the answer for defender because Luis Filipe is terrible. Nuno Gomes should also be sold. If we find solutions to these proflems we can maybe go to the uefa final. Força Benfica!
