Beto

Classy centre-back Beto was somewhat surprisingly offloaded by Sporting in 2006 after over 300 appearances for the Lisbon giants. A first-team regular in two Portuguese championship winning teams, Beto also amassed 31 Portugal caps while playing in his home country.

A reliable defender, he also has a happy of knack of finding the net, either using his dominant aerial game or, unusually for a centre-back, as a free-kick specialist. He is nearing 50 career goals. After a short spell at Bordeaux Beto bounced back to his best form at Huelva and signed a three-year contract in the summer of 2007.

Carlos Martins

Carlos Martins is one of the great enigma’s of the Portuguese game. A midfielder of immense talent, the former Sporting Lisbon man has too often been let down by a hot temperament and a bewildering inconsistency, alternating dazzling displays with largely anonymous matches. He will be hoping a move to La Liga can reignite his form and get him into Luiz Filipe Scolari’s thoughts again in the Portugal national team.

Silvestre Varela

Silvestre Varela is a promising striker who earned the nickname “the Drogba of Caparica” because of his similarity to the Ivory Coast striker and his birthplace on the outskirts of Lisbon. Despite showing great promise both at club level and playing for the Portugal U21 team, Varela has thus far been unable to earn a place in Sporting’s squad, and will be hoping a productive season in La Liga can push him into Paulo Bento’s plans.
