Nani’s skills spark ‘showboating’ debate

Winger criticised for “humiliating” Arsenal – Have your say

Nani

Nani’s performance against Arsenal in Manchester United’s convincing 4-0 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday was almost certainly his best since arriving in the Premiership, but the Portuguese has caused a stir in England for the wrong reasons following the match.

The former Sporting man, who scored one and created two others in his side’s dominant victory, was the subject of some heavy challenges from Arsenal players in the closing stages after antagonising his opponents with some provocative showboating.

With his side already 4-0 up, Nani juggled the ball on his head and performed a few kick-ups to evade the attentions of Justin Hoyte and Mathieu Flamini, both of whom made aggressive attempts to bring the Portuguese down. Shortly afterwards, William Gallas kicked Nani after the ball had gone in another show of frustration from the Gunners.

After the match, Arsenal’s Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva said: “Some of our guys were upset that he did that, but they have calmed down now. I told him it wasn’t necessary to do that. I told him he could get a bad kick, although I don’t think any of our players would kick him too hard.”

Meanwhile, Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger told reporters: “Nani was very good today but he did not need to juggle the ball. He is a young player and wanted to show what he could do. Maybe he can learn from this.”

(article continued below)

United boss Alex Ferguson seemingly agreed, but was furious at Gallas escaping a red card for his deliberate swipe at Nani, which has since been deemed unworthy of further action by referee Alan Wiley, who has watched the incident again on video.

“I agree he shouldn’t be doing that, he doesn’t need to do that,” said the Scot. “In some ways it shows a great deal of courage to do what he did, that’s one side of it. But he doesn’t need to do that and we’ve had a word with him.

“I thought Gallas should have been sent off,” the United manager said. “He kicked Nani from behind with the ball 20 yards away. I think it should be a red card.”

Should Nani be discouraged from showing off late on in games? Without question his antics were popular with the home crowd, but was his provocative ball juggling unnecessary humiliation of his fellow professionals, or simply another way for a skilful footballer to express himself and please his supporters? I missed that part of the game.. at first when I was told about it I thought he went into the corner and was time wasting with his keep-ups..
Now that I have seen it.. come one guys.. next you will say if Ronaldo does any step overs after their up by two it is showboating.. I am glad Gallas was smart enough to take a minor poke.. because a suspension would have hurt Aresenal in the prossess much worse than an FA Cup Loss.. and if Flemoni had connected.. he would have faced a ban too.. not to mention if Nani had got up they would have found out how strong they say Nani really is.. he learned his flair on the hard side of town.. not some panzy French locale like Flamerini..

Arsenal fans are such hypocrites. They never said anything when Thierry Henry use to showboat and now once a player of the opposition does it they get butthurt. Grow a pair.

    reply to: Sir Henry Norris.

this is presisely the reason what all the fuss is about. if he was using his ball jugling skills to beat defenders on the atack no1 would have any probs with that. the issue is he was running back toward his own goal so it was needless and seen as showboating (or takin the mickey out of/disrispecting arsenal). No1 in the prem is against skilful play...

No wonder skilfull players like Benzema and kaka doesn't fancy playing here, if skillful play (so called showboating) is frowned upon, we should be celebrating skill not players who can't stand it so end up kicking the player. The world cup occassionally throws up amazing skills, that kids see and try to copy the following day, this would make the premiership even more popular and stop the spanish and italians belittling our techniques in this country, keep up the good work nani, we still love you.

Oh dear. Craig Mc - Arsenal players 'kick anything that moves' do they? What about Wes Brown/Ferdinand et al? Thank God GNeville is out - you remember what he did to Reyes? Pots and kettles my lad.

On the main point, I have no problem with what Nani did. You were stuffing us good and proper, so why not rub it in. I would have enjoyed it if it had been the other way round. I've seen mostly similar comments from fellow Gooners on other blogs so maybe Johnny Boy should read a few before he makes any other illiterate rants in capital letters...

why peventing someone who's got and worked hard to perform his panoply of skills and tricks when some 76,000 spectators haVE PAID THEIR TICKETS TO SEE THEM. A BRAZILIAN WOULD HAVE LAUGH AT YOU? FOOTBALL WAS IN NO CASE MADE TO BE DULL AND SAD. FOOTBALL IS NOT ONLY KICKING IN THE BALL AND RUNNING. are you jealous of nani. why won't he please alol the fans who hace paid their tickets and journey to watch what football is really made of; FUN

Showboating and loosing the ball is unforgivable, but if the opposition aren't good enough to take the ball off him other than by fouling then long may he continue. He certainly has the skill so let him use it, it's only through experience one learns what one can and cannot do, to reach ones full potential things have to be tried, it will make him more of a target though. I imagine his response will be more tricks and skill to avoid those intent on harming him. Refs be aware, Nani will take some heavy tackles as a result of NOTHING ILLEGAL other than making other footballers look like fools.

Nani is an incredibly talented player. In a couple of years when he's more mature United will have the best two wingers in the world on either flank. IMO I even think he can be better than Ron.

To what I know the ARS fan and wenger are simply jealous of MANU style of play and the players MANU had. Arsenal will always be an Ars..h.. because they are trying to emulate MANU style as MANU won last season. Last draw with MANU is a joke and now we have shown them how football is played. Play your own games don’t mess with MANU, they will destroy your ARS again.
Well done NANI, even if the FA don’t punished GALLAS it’s doesn’t matter because we beat the HELL out of them ARS. AC Milan will finish them off what we left.
    LONG LIVE MANU AND NANI.

It was skill, plain and simple. If people start saying you should not use your skill to evade someone, what would Brazil do?

This preening nang got everything he deserved. I'm a neutral but I thought fairplay when I saw Billy Gallas kick Nani in the arse. Keep it up!
  • Sir Henry Norris,
    19/02/2008 12:38
Didn't really see much skill in running towards you own goal flicking the ball up a couple of times. I could do that. Seen Henry do that sort of thing on many occasions, but towards the opponents' goal which is rather more impressive. Anyway, I thought Flamini's tackle was the best part of that particular passage of play.

in my opinion he hasn't clue about famous and very great player like ronldiniho , rhobinio , zidan and terry henery, and i advise him to read and watch their talent like this. they show their talent in such away that even their openent funs admire, it is not like nani's arrogant and overreacting show, if he has any talent left he is welcome to show us in the most expected primer leage shampion.

he should be able to showboat if he likes and if some one cleans him up for doing it then he should have no complaints and not act like a little bitch

I think that is not expected from a young player. If it is need to do so it should be against some great defenders like G clichy and sagna. In my opinion it didn't show tallent.

I'm an Arsenal season ticket holder & I can't see what all the fuss is about... Nani is welcome to "showboat" - we were stuffed good & proper... there was no debate when Thierry used to play keepy uppy on his way to scoring great goals...

it seems like people want to try & ban skill which is, after all, what we pay to see

No doubt Harry and Dicey are Arse fans who follow the philosophy of their players. When faced with brilliance not on their team they resort to violence - physical or verbal. Henry and Bergkamp were brilliant players but that did not mean the opposition tried to kick their careers into touch.

Nani is a great addition to the Premiership. Try stopping him fairly why don't you.

He was discouraged from showing off late on by Gallas giving him a kick up the arse. Let him keep trying it, he'll just get up everyone's nose and they will all kick the twat..

ManU fans loved Nani's showboating. Arsenal players always revert to type when they are losing - kick anything that moves. Several of their players tried to do damage to Nani, but they didn't succeed. I hope Nani never loses his artistry, because FLAIR players are loved at ManU.
