Maritimo and Rio Ave humbled by lower league clubs

Big three through to Wednesday’s 4th-round draw

Two top-flights teams tumbled out of the Portuguese Cup at the third round stage of the competition.

The biggest surprise came at northern 3rd-division club, Arouca, who knocked out Maritimo on penalties after holding the islanders to a goalless draw after 120 minutes.

Rio Ave also fell by the wayside as they were beaten 3-2 at Liga Vitalis club Gil Vicente. Igor Souza was the hero for the home team, scoring a brace including the winner in extra time.

The big three all safely booked their passage into Wednesday’s fourth-round draw. Porto hammered Sertanense 4-0, Sporting overcame Leiria 1-0, while Benfica were made to sweat by Penafiel, winning a penalty shoot-out after the match at the Estadio da Luz had ended goalless.
