Naval pile more misery on Belenenses

Portuguese Cup 4th round wrap

The 4th round of the Portuguese Cup was dominated by the clash of the titans at Alvalade, with FC Porto beating Sporting on penalties in an incident-packed match. (Sporting 1-1 FC Porto match report).

The two other matches of most interest played on Saturday pitted together four teams from the top flight.

Naval beat Belenenses 3-2 after extra time, a result that continues the excellent start to the season of Ulisses Morais’ team, while there is no end in sight to Belenenses’ dismal run.

Goals from Bolivia and Marinho either side of half time seemingly put the home side in control, but Belenenses hit back with two goals in a minute from Roncatto and Vinicius. However, an expertly taken free-kick from Alex Hauw in the closing minutes of extra time sent Naval through to the next round.

Vidigal wins then resigns

In Coimbra Estrela da Amadora put the club’s financial problems behind them with a single goal victory thanks to a fine individual Varela strike. The team from the Lisbon suburbs have not been paid any wages since the close season, and coach Lito Vidigal resigned from his post in protest of the situation immediately after the match.

On Saturday evening Guimaraes booked their place in the last 16 with a 2-0 win over Boavista, thanks to second-half goals from Douglas and Fajardo.

Heroes of the 3rd round, Arouca, almost added another top-flight scalp to their defeat of Maritimo. The match against Pacos de Ferreira went to penalties after a goalless draw, with visitors scraping through.

Liga Sagres table toppers Leixoes needed extra time to eventually see off Santana 3-0, while Trofense continued their recent improved form with a 2-0 win at Gondomar.
