“Call me!” Eriksson’s agent tells Benfica
Athole Still reveals Swede could return to Portuguese club
Sven-Goran Eriksson’s agent, Athole Still, has come out and admitted that Benfica could be the destination for his client should he be let go from his position at Manchester City at the end of the season.
The well-travelled coach is expected to be axed in England after only having been inserted into the job one year ago. Manchester City owner, Thanksin Shinawatra, has made his feelings known that he is upset with the team’s performances in the second half of the Premiership, laying the blame squarely on the coach he hand-picked himself.
Much has been speculated as to where the former England boss will end up. According to Still, the future is wide open for his client and Benfica is a possible destination. Eriksson coached at the Portuguese club on two separate occasions during the 1980s. Still feels that the Lisbon club is as good a place as any for Eriksson to continue coaching career.
“The door is not closed to Benfica. At this moment, it is not for anyone. There is very little possibility that he will continue although it is still not 100% that he will leave Manchester City. After the final game of the English championship, in two weeks’ time, it will be definitively decided if he continues or not.”
Still left a message for any interested parties to contact him directly if they are interested in contracting Eriksson as their coach. “We will only study proposals at the end of the season. This is the most probable scenario at this time. If any club would like to speak with Eriksson, call me! Everyone has got my number.”
One stumbling block may be the Swede’s wages. Eriksson commands a handsome salary and that may price him out of a possible return to Benfica. It is not known whether he would lower his salary demands in order to make a return to the club where he is fondly remembered.
