Benfica’s Leo signs contract extension

Brazilian left-back ends speculation about future

Leo

Left-back Leo has renewed his contract with Benfica for another year with an option for a further season, putting an end to almost an entire season of speculation about whether or not he would continue in Lisbon.

The 32-year-old Brazilian wing-back defender has made a big impact on the team since he arrived in 2005.

He said he was a bit anxious during the season about his renewal and after a disappointing campaign he says next year will be like a new start.

“I’m really motivated. Next season I will be in my maximum shape to conquer something I achieved at Santos (the national title).

“I had other offers but I love Benfica. I feel really good here. I’m not a player of many teams but the teams I play for I always make a nice history.”

In his long career Leo has only played for 5 teams including Benfica: Americano 96-97; Uniao Sao Joao 97-99; Palmeiras 99-00; Santos 00-05.
