Angel Di Maria targets starting berth

Benfica categorically deny Nuno Gomes exit

Angel Di Maria

Benfica starlet Angel Di Maria had a bright first year with the Eagles last season, endearing himself to the fans and reinforcing the club’s faith in the investment they had made.

The U20 World Cup winner is looking to build on last season’s achievements, and has set some goals for himself for the upcoming campaign. “I expect to work towards a starting berth in the team,” said Di Maria bluntly.

“I know I will be at a disadvantage because of the Olympics. I believe that I will miss the first match, although it depends how far we progress. But when I arrive back I expect to be a starter and show what I can do.

“We have to work hard and give our maximum to reach the top. For now, everything is going as planned. There are some players missing, but we must remain calm and, little by little, things will come together.”

Di Maria also spoke about his involvement with the Argentina Olympic team and added that it was an opportunity he is looking forward to and one that he could not pass up. “For me it is important to be in the Olympics alongside some great players. I expect to give my best and win the gold medal.”

Gomes exit denied

In other team news, Benfica have denied that Nuno Gomes will not be joining Greek side Olympiakos.

News had surfaced that the Hellenic club are looking to sign the Portuguese international but Eagles spokesperson, Joao Gabriel, categorically denied that Nuno Gomes would be leaving the club, saying he will report to training camp on 20 July after his holiday break.
