Benfica eye double capture
South Americans Fellipe Bastos and Cesar Delgado targeted
With three weeks to go before the transfer window officially opens, Benfica are wasting little time in readjusting their squad to attack the second half of the season.
Brazilian youngster Fellipe Bastos will sign today, with Argentina international Cesar Delgado also on Camacho’s wanted list, while Argentine duo Bergessio and Andres Diaz are to be released.
Benfica are primed to land their first signature of the winter transfer period today. The Lisbon club are expected to complete the signing of Fellipe Bastos from Brazilian club Botafogo.
The defensive midfielder, who turns 18 in February, is being touted as one of the more gifted players of his generation. Bastos has caught the attention of several other clubs, including FC Porto and PSV Eindhoven, but Benfica pounced at the opportunity as soon as his contract expired and are set to sign the player on a three or four year deal.
The Brazilian is to undergo the mandatory medical exams before signing a contract. Upon arriving at Lisbon Airport with his parents Bastos said, “I am very enthusiastic to represent a big club like Benfica.”
Young brigade
Bastos will join a merry band of youngsters at the Portuguese club, such as Angel Di Maria, Freddy Adu, Miguel Vitor, Romeu Riberio, Kaz Patafa and Yu Dabao.
Meanwhile, according to press reports Argentine international Cesar Delgado is also close to completing a move to Benfica. The 26-year-old currently plays for Cruz Azul in Mexico, but his club have agreed to satisfy his wish for a move to Europe.
“Six months ago we reached an agreement with Cesar: if a European club makes an offer we are willing to negotiate,” stated club director, Eduardo de la Torre, although he refused to confirm if Benfica had made a bid.
Delgado was voted the best forward in the Mexican league in 2005 and has scored 57 goals for Cruz Azul, in 135 matches. He has been capped 20 times by Argentina.
Bergessio and Diaz to leave
While two South Americans may be coming to the Estadio da Luz, two others are heading for the exit door.
The representatives of Argentine duo Bergessio and Andres Diaz have been informed to seek new clubs for their clients.
Both players were bought in the summer when Fernando Santos was still the head coach, but they have failed to impress current boss Jose Antonio Camacho and have been released.
