Camacho defends under-fire Binya

Spaniard calls for Uefa not to make player an example

Jose Antonio Camacho

Jose Antonio Camacho has finally spoken out about Benfica midfielder Binya’s tackle on Celtic’s Scott Brown during the team’s 1-0 loss in the Champions League in midweek.

While admitting that the challenge was bad, the experienced Spaniard defended his player, stating that people have condemned Binya far too quickly, and denounced the call for him to be made an example of.

“Binya has been heavily criticised because he is not a famous player. Fortunately, nothing happened to the Celtic player. It was a very ugly challenge and he knows that.

“But there are many challenges in the Champions League that have occurred, that have injured other players, but nothing came from them. This player, who does not have much experience in the Champions League, deserves an opportunity.

“He made a mistake and now it is over. He is not a player to be made an example of. I will not mention names, but I say that there have been many harsh tackles in the Champions League and many players who the referees should have sent off.”

Binya’s case goes before Uefa’s Disciplinary Committee on November 15 and only then will the player know his full punishment. The Cameroonian will receive at least the mandatory one-game suspension for being sent off, but could be suspended for up to five matches if the governing body sees fit.

“Uefa should take into account he is a player who commits very few fouls. He has a lot of things in his favour. He is a player who is still learning and, fortunately, has now been called up to train with his national team. He made a mistake but I feel it is my duty to defend him,” added Camacho.
