Boavista beat Guimaraes in five-goal thriller

Boavista 3-2 Guimaraes

After a lukewarm 11th round in the Bwin Liga, Boavista and Vitoria Guimaraes closed out the weekend programme with a thrilling match that ended with a 3-2 victory for the checked shirts.

It was the perfect response after the 6-1 thrashing that Boavista took in their last match against Benfica. Fary set the tone for an exciting match by opening the scoring in the 1st minute of play as the Senegalese striker converted a Jorge Ribeiro free kick.

A sign that it was not to be Vitoria’s night came when Boavista doubled their lead in the 12th minute, in a carbon copy of the first goal, but this time it was Radanovic who deflected Jorge Ribeiro’s free kick into his own net.

Grzelak then had a glorious opportunity to put the Black Panthers three up, but miss-hit a Rissutt pass. In the 22nd minute, Boavista were lucky to not have had a penalty awarded against them as Marcelao took down Joao Alves in the box, but the referee waved play on.

Guimaraes pulled a goal back in the 28th minute when substitute Felipe converted a Fajardo corner kick to make it 2-1. Both teams had opportunities to score again before the break. First Fary’s shot from inside the box was sensationally saved by Nilson, then Fajardo let fly with a rocket of a shot that ended up just the wrong side of the post.

All out attack

The visitors almost levelled the scores in the 55th minute, but Felipe rattled his shot off the Boavista post. The match had an incessant ebb and flow of attack as Boavista were looking for the goal to put away their visitors, while Vitoria were also throwing men forward in an attempt to draw level.

And they did just that in the 66th minute as Portugal U21 striker Targino, who had come on just a minute prior, scored a fine individual goal to make it 2-2.

However, it was Boavista who had last laugh as they scored their third goal from another dead-ball situation. Jorge Ribeiro swung a cross to the far post where Marcelao headed it across the 6-yard box for a surging Ricardo Silva to shovel the ball into the back of the net and give Boavista a much needed victory.
