Jorge Costa sacked in shock Braga move

Poor performances and results dictate dismissal

Jorge Costa

In a shock move, Sporting Braga have announced the sacking of head coach Jorge Costa. It appears that the 1-1 draw away to Naval was the last straw with the Braga brass, who decided to let the axe fall on the former FC Porto defender.

The club issued a statement on their website confirming that the Portuguese side were no longer retaining the services of the former Portuguese international:

“After the game against Naval, the president Antonio Salvador met with the head coach and after a brief conversation communicated the decision that had been made, which was immediately accepted and understood by the head coach.

The performances were below par and the results verified this, which were not in accordance with the objectives and ambitions of the club. These were the basis of the decision.

S.C. Braga is not without gratitude for the professionalism and dedication shown by Jorge Costa during the time he served the club.”

Braga have enlisted Antonio Caldas, the club’s junior ranks coach, as the man to take over at the helm from Jorge Costa on a caretaker basis.

Costa becomes this season’s fourth coaching casualty behind Fernando Santos (Benfica), Manuel Machado (Academica) and Fernando Chalo (Naval).
