PSV hit by Bordeaux blitz

PSV 1-3 Bordeaux

Bordeaux stunned PSV at the Phillips Stadium in an entertaining game involving two sides already certain of their fate in the competition. The French side blitzed the hosts with three goals in the opening 36 minutes to record a memorable win as they head into the UEFA Cup.

PSV, already confirmed as group runners up, started without injured Portuguese defender Manuel da Costa, but were otherwise at practically full strength.

However, Bordeaux started brightly, and forward Jean-Claude Darcheville had already headed at Gomes, before they took the lead on seven minutes. Darcheville’s throughball put Faubert in on goal, and the right-sided midfielder slotted past the onrushing Gomes.

PSV’s Brazilian defender Alex went on a brilliant run, before a move involving Mendez and Farfan saw Diego Tardelli miss at the back post.

Bordeaux then doubled their lead with the goal of the game. Former Tottenham midfielder Stephane Dalmat breezed past Alex before beating Gomes with a wonderful chip from all of 25 metres to put his side two up.

Just when the Ligue 1 outfit thought things couldn’t get any better, Darcheville added a third. The powerful forward played a neat one-two with Ducasse, before rounding Rame and driving his finish into the net.

The home side failed to threaten much in the second half, despite the best efforts of veteran captain Phillip Cocu. The former Barcelona midfielder had one effort punched away by Rame, before seeing another low drive fly just wide of the bottom corner.

The Dutch side’s consolation came with three minutes left on the clock, with defender Alex scoring his fifth goal of the season. The big centre-back produced a typically brilliant Brazilian free-kick, hammering the ball low past Rame from the edge of the area.
