FC Porto 1-0 Schalke - Match Reaction

Jesualdo Ferreira, Porto coach:

“Whoever watched this game will understand why we are hugely frustrated. Schalke only created danger in extra time. FC Porto played a great game in the way we resisted the sending off and the way we reacted.

“The team controlled the Germans well, who came here to defend for 90 minutes, only in the last 15 minutes of extra time did they take any risks. Porto was the best team on the pitch and the best team are out.

“Two things stick in the mind: the unpleasant taste left by the way we go out of this tournament, and an FC Porto team that played against all opponents with a high-quality game and creating lots of chances. We’re down at the moment, but our confidence is high.

“Now we have to recuperate the players, above all from the mental point of view. For what they did tonight they did not deserve to go out like this.”

Bosingwa, Porto defender:

“I think tonight we proved beyond doubt we are better than Schalke 04. We were superior, we created several chances to score, we dominated possession, etc. We just have to congratulate the Schalke goalkeeper who put in a tremendous performance.

“I didn’t know him, but he played the game of his life. We are frustrated, we feel we could have got through this round, but we leave with our head held high because we tried everything to get the victory.”

Raul Meireles, Porto midfielder:

“We’re all sad but proud. We showed again that we are a great team. Losing like this is hard to take because we know we were true champions on the pitch. It’s not worth talking about whether there were controversial decisions because the truth is we had lots of chances but didn’t put them away.”

Bruno Alves, Porto defender:

“For what we did over 90 minutes and extra time we were clearly the better team and we had chances to kill the game. We created a lot of opportunities but unfortunately we didn’t manage to finish them. I sad to have missed the penalty but proud of what we did in the game.

“We’ve still got a lot to win this season. Now we have to think about winning against Academica.”
