Antonio Semedo swaps CFR Cluj for Steaua Bucharest

Portuguese midfielder joins Romania’s biggest club

Antonio Semedo

Romanian league and cup winner Antonio Semedo has left CFR Cluj for the country’s most successful club Steaua Bucharest.

Steaua, who have won the national championship a record 23 times and were European Champions in 1985/86, paid the Transylvanian club a fee just short of 1m euros for the attacking midfielder.

Former Estrela da Amadora player Semedo played a key role along with several other Portuguese team-mates in the sensational title triumph by little known Cluj last season – the first time the club had won the league in its 100 year history.

Semedo, 29 years old, scored 7 goals in 35 matches as Cluj qualified for the Champions League.

The speedy forward will not miss out on playing in Europe’s top club competition however. Steaua are also in this season’s Champions League, having been draw in Group F with Bayern Munich, Fiorentina and Lyon.

Semedo will wear the number 9 shirt and joins compatriot Tiago Gomes at Steaua.
