Everton have given me back my confidence says Fernandes
Ex-Benfica midfielder settles in quickly at Goodison Park
Manuel Fernandes says that the belief shown in him by Everton is the reason behind his sensational start to life at Goodison Park following his January switch.
The Benfica-owned midfielder spent the first half of the season on loan at fellow Premiership side Portsmouth, but an unusual clause in the deal between the clubs meant that if the 21-year-old played more than two successive games, Pompey would be forced to complete a permanent transfer.
After terminating his deal at Fratton Park in January Fernandes moved north to Everton on a six-month loan deal shortly afterwards, and has been a huge hit with both the players and fans at the Merseyside club.
“What’s different at Everton compared to Portsmouth?” said Fernandes. “Well, I can play more than two games in a row for a start!”
“But when you are really wanted at a place, like I am here at Everton, it is good for your self-confidence and if you feel okay at a place, things are going to be okay. I want to stay.”
“I’m really enjoying it here. Like I’ve said before, we have a really good squad with some great team-mates, and I can concentrate on getting more fit and doing my best. I hope there is a lot more to come from me.”
Fans at Goodison have taken to Fernandes and are already encouraging the club to make the transfer permanent in the summer, while Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta admits to being impressed with his new team-mate.
“I think he is a good player and he helps us to play more football and create more things,” Arteta told EvertonTV. “He has settled really quickly.”
Fernandes missed Everton’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Monday, but is expected to return to the Toffees’ squad for Friday’s match with Fulham.
