Nuno Assis and Luis Filipe sign for Guimaraes
Champions League participants bolster squad
Guimaraes have strengthened their squad with the capture of experienced Benfica duo Nuno Assis and Luis Filipe.
Midfielder Assis returns to his former club, signing a three-year contract, while right-back Filipe comes on a one-season loan.
The club’s website announced that negotiations for the pair had been ongoing for weeks, stating that Guimaraes are delighted to tie up the deals as they look to build on their spectacular 2007/08 season and prepare for their first foray into Europe for several years.
The crafty 30-year-old Assis will bring guile to the midfield, while the versatility of 29-year-old Filipe, who started his career as an attacking midfielder, will provide healthy competition in the squad, especially for right-back Andrezinho.

Basel challenge
The two players, both with extensive Champions League experience, are likely to be big assets as the northerners attempt to book their place in the world’s greatest club competition later this month.
Manuel Cajuda’s team now know that their opponents in the final qualifying round to enter the competition proper will be Swiss champions FC Basel, who knocked out Swedish outfit Gothenburg yesterday.
Guimaraes will make history if they enter the competition, and will join FC Porto and Sporting as Portugal’s representatives this season.
