Carlos Martins excited to play in “world’s best championship”
Midfielder presented at La Liga club Recreativo Huelva
Portuguese international Carlos Martins has expressed his happiness at sealing a move to Spanish side Recreativo Huelva.
The former Sporting midfielder was presented to the media at the Nuevo Colombino on Monday after signing a four-year deal with the club, who were the surprise package in La Liga last season when they finished 8th.
“To play in the Spanish league is a dream for all European footballers,” said Martins. I opted for the best championship and I am going to help Huelva to do as well or even better than this year.”
“It is a team that plays a good style of football, and always has the fans on their side.”
Despite leaving Portuguese football, Martins is keen to show his appreciation for Sporting, having enjoyed a fourteen-year association with the Lisbon club.
“I owe everything to Sporting,” he said. “I will continue to be a sportinguista and I am grateful for everything that the club has given me down the years. I wish them the biggest happiness.”
Beto rumours quashed
Meanwhile, the agent of current Recreativo defender Roberto Beto has dismissed speculation that the former Portugal international could be set for a summer move to fellow La Liga side Valencia.
Beto, another former Sporting player, has impressed in his first season in Spain following his move last summer, and rumours have suggested that Valencia would be keen on taking him to the Mestalla for next season.
However, Paulo Barbosa told reporters: “Beto has given his word, and all that is needed is a little patience. I can say that Beto will play in Spain next season, and his team will be Recreativo.”
