Inter Milan offer Figo contract extension
Italians want Portuguese to extend career one more season
Veteran Portuguese winger Luis Figo will be offered a new contract by Italian champions Inter, according to president Massimo Moratti.
The 35-year-old was due to leave the Nerazurri last summer, after joining the Serie A outfit from Real Madrid in 2005, but was persuaded to stay on at the San Siro for another year in the hope of helping the side defend their title and launch an assault on the Champions League.
Figo himself has repeatedly expressed a strong desire to end his European football career at the end of the current campaign and move on to North America or the Arabian peninsula, but Moratti is keen to retain the winger for one more year.
“It’s not certain that Figo will retire. I will certainly make him an offer to continue next season,” Moratti said.
“I have been touched by his willingness to make himself useful and be crucial. Without pressurising him, I will offer him a contract extension.”
Inter hold a six-point advantage over Roma at the top of Serie A going into Saturday’s home match with Reggina, while in the Champions League Figo’s men hope to recover a 2-0 deficit against Liverpool at the San Siro next week.
