Leiria make Uefa Cup after thriller

Uniao de Leiria 4-1 Hajduk Kula (agg. 5-2)

After being one minute from losing the tie in normal time, then three minutes from losing in extra time, Leiria finally overcame Hajduk Kula, to earn a place in the second qualifying round of the Uefa Cup, which will start on 16 August.

Taking to the field one goal down from the first leg played in Serbia last week, Leira were faced with an ultra-defensive Hajduk Kula, who played practically the whole ninety minutes with ten men behind the ball.

Cadu and Sougou had half chances in the first half, but the home team’s best chance seemed to have come and gone ten minutes from time when Paulo Cesar crashed a header against the bar.

However, the same player scored in the 90th minute after a cross by Sougou to send the tie into extra time.

Speedy Senegalese winger Sougou proved the hero of the extra thirty mintues, winning two penalties and scoring a goal to make sure Leiria’s European adventure continues.
