Point takes Leiria up to third

Leiria 0-0 Boavista

Leiria and Boavista played out a goalless draw at the Estadio de Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa last night.

The point shot the home side up to joint third place in the table, but Leiria will feel they deserved more as they were the team who created the majority of the game’s opportunities.

Leiria registered the first good goalscoring chance in the 20th minute as Sougou showed good skill as he attempted a bicycle kick from a Toure cross that just missed the net.

Sougou was at it again a minute later as he managed to nip the ball off Boavista defender Ricardo Silva and surged towards the net, only to be denied by Boavista goalkeeper Khadim.

The lively Sougou nearly got a well deserved goal just before the break as he tried to chip the ball over Khadim, but the keeper did well to stretch himself and tip the ball over the net.

Livewire Sougou

After the restart Sougou continued to run the show and his shot in the 47th minute just cleared the Boavista crossbar. Finally Boavista showed some life as Ricardo Sousa took a free kick in the 58th minute that ended up on the wrong side of Leiria’s crossbar.

An indication that it was not to be Leiria’s night then occurred in the next two opportunities.

First, in the 68th minute, Eder tested Khadim’s resolve by launching a hard shot that the keeper could not handle. From the ensuing rebound Paulo Cesar was Johnny on the spot, but managed to hit the crossbar with his effort. However, Cesar had another bite of the cherry, but this time the ball hit the post and landed in the keeper’s arms.

Two minutes later Sougou was back in the mix when his back heel just outside the six-yard box with the keeper out of position was somehow prevented from going in the net by Khadim. Leiria’s last effort came in the 78th minute when Ivanildo saw his free kick just nick the Boavista crossbar.

Leiria will feel like there was not much else they could do, having forced the issue the whole game and still came up short, while Boavista know they were lucky to earn a point.

Domingos Paciencia, Leiria coach:

“It was a good game on our part, but we were unlucky not to finish any of the opportunities we created. We played sufficiently well to win; we just lacked a little luck at certain moments. For all that took place we can say that we lost two points. Boavista came here to get a draw, to gain confidence and recover their place in the standings.”

Jaime Pacheco, Boavista coach:

“We won one point as I had the perfect notion of the championship that Leiria are having. If Leiria had won they would have been alone in third place. As for us, we are not yet as good as our opponents and had to be more cautious. Leiria were the better side but we needed points.”
