Livewire Sougou fires Leiria to victory
Leiria 1-0 Maritimo
Leiria moved up to third place in the table with a 1-0 victory over Maritimo in match played in front of less than 1,000 spectators. The only goal of the game was scored on 78 minutes by Senegalese forward Sougou.
The home team dominated the majority of the match and had the ball in the net on 25 minutes through the impressive Sougou, only for the effort to be correctly ruled out for an earlier handball by N’Gal.
Despite always playing second fiddle, Maritimo rightly felt aggrieved in the 54th minutes when Litapin scored but the goal was ruled out for an extremely dubious offside.
Sougou was then lucky to remain on the pitch after a disgraceful foul on Wenio, but the referee opted to show only the yellow card.
The striker took advantage of the official’s leniency by striking the winner – his second goal of the season – and also hit the bar as Domingos Paciencia’s team moved up to joint third on seven points, together with Braga, Naval and Pacos de Ferreira.
Both teams face tough away matches next weekend. Leiria travel to Sporting while Maritimo take on champions and current leaders, Porto.
