Leiria release Marcelinho
Brazilian third player to rescind contract in fortnight
Uniao de Leiria have let go their third player in the last two weeks as the club make preparations for being relegated from the top flight at the end of the season. The Leiriense have released Marcelinho after acquiring the forward only in the January transfer window.
Leiria have recently released Maciel and Ferreira from their contracts with Marcelinho the latest Brazilian to be told he can leave.
“I am returning to Brazil,” confessed Marcelinho. “I came here to try and help the team get out of their situation, but we did not manage it. As the club’s directors have already accepted being relegated as a certainty, we felt that it would be best if it ended this way.”
“Now I can take advantage of the transfer window in my country, as in May it will not be possible (to be registered). I accepted the money from the two months that I was here, but have agreed to forego the rest of the contract. It was a good understanding for both parties.”
The three players are not expected to be the only ones leaving the club before the season comes to an official end. Leiria are trying to recoup as much money as possible in order to leave themselves debt free, as far as possible, as they prepare to play in Portugal’s second tier.
