Leiria release striker Ferreira

Striker joins Maciel in leaving club with immediate effect

Relegation bound Uniao de Leiria are already planning for life outside the top flight next season. Last week the club agreed to release Maciel with immediate effect and now Leiria have allowed striker Ferreira to do the same.

The club sit rock bottom in the table with only 8 points to their name and with no hope of turning their fortunes around. In what appears to be a cost cutting measure, Leiria agreed to let the Brazilian go, whose contract was to expire at the end of the season.

“Everything has been settled. We thought that it would be best solution,” explained the striker. “Like this, I do not have to wait until August in order to play at a new club. I can still take advantage of the final weeks of the transfer window in Brazil.”

“Also, it was good for Leiria as they save some money which they would have had to pay me if I stayed until the end of my contract.”

The player has also represented Farense, Vitoria Guimaraes, Beira-Mar, Gil Vicente and Nacional and said that one day he would like to return to Portugal.

“Everything that I have got out of football, and not only in financial terms, but in the name I created for myself, I owe to Portugal. If I have a good season in Brazil I believe that I can return because this country is my second home.”
