Boavista relegation confirmed
Pacos de Ferreira retain place in top flight
Boavista will play the 2008/09 season in the Liga Vitalis (2nd division), with Pacos de Ferreira earning a reprieve and remaining in the top flight.
The Portuguese Football Federation have confirmed that the decisions made by the Council of Justice in the wake of the Portuguese match-fixing scandal will stand. Boavista were punished with relegation for having bribed referees in the 2003/04 season.
The news comes as a huge blow to the Porto club, who will also miss out on a place in the Carlsberg Cup as a result of the ruling. Second-tier clubs begin their campaign in the competition this Saturday, but Boavista, holding onto the hope of remaining in the top division, did not register their squad in time to take part in the competition.
Pacos de Ferreira were obviously delighted with the outcome of the long-running disciplinary case. “The new season is about to start and we believe in a positive participation. We believe we can avoid the trials and tribulations and disappointments of last season,” stated club president Fernando Sequeira.
