Makukula signs off in style in comfortable Maritimo win
Maritimo 2-0 Boavista
Maritimo saw off Boavista 2-0 at the Barreiros and rocketed up to fifth place in the table, only two points behind Vitoria Guimaraes in fourth spot.
Makukula, in what might very well be his last game for the green & reds before moving to Benfica, opened the scoring while Djalma added another before the end of the first half.
It would be the home side who looked dangerous first as Makukula rang a shot off of Jehle’s left post in the 28th minute. The near miss would be a prelude of what was to come as the Portuguese international racked up his 7th goal in the liga when he powered a header past Jehle to make it 1-0.
Just before the interval Maritimo doubled their lead when Djalma only had to get a foot onto Mossoro’s lethal cross.
Makukula constant danger
The second half was all Maritimo as Boavista’s offence was nowhere to be seen. Makukula almost had a brace when he headed Bruno’s free kick inches past the net.
Makukula appears to be a smart buy for Benfica as the striker looked dangerous every time he got a touch on the ball before being substituted in the 77th minute.
The shellacking that Boavista took from Naval in last weekend’s Portuguese Cup seemed to take its toll on the visitors’ performance as their four game undefeated streak in league play came to a halt.
For Maritimo, the win is their third in their last four league matches, but time will tell if the team can continue their impressive ways without the services of their top goalscorer.
