Final whistle goes. Portugal obtain a crucial three points to complete a highly satisfactory few day's work. After a good start to the match Portugal struggled to break down the stubborn Kazak defence, but the entrace of substites Nani and Makukula brought new life to the team. The Maritimo striker marked his debut with a highly deserved goal, while Nani looked every bit a classy performer, combining superbly with Ronaldo on several occasions inlcuding setting up Portugal's second goal for his Manchester United team-mate.

 Goal for Kazakhstan!!! Ricardo produces a magnificent flying save to keep out an initial strike, but can do nothing to stop the follow-up header from Byakov after some slack defending.

 GOAL for Portugal!!! Yet again Nani and Ronaldo combine beautifully with the latter smashing in a short pass after being perfectly set up by Nani.

Superb combination between Ronaldo and Nani ends with the young winger dinking a shot over the keeper but just wide.

Late pressure from Kazakhstan. Dangerous cross is cleared by... Makukula!

Great chance missed by Ronaldo. The winger is picked out with a perfect cross but heads disappointingly wide.

Ronaldo comes close to doubling Portugal's lead. Nani, who has made a big impact since coming on, again combines well with his club colleague, whose shot is kept out with difficulty by Loriya. Moments later Makukula almost grabs his second with a tremendous shot that just clears the crossbar.

The goal immediately leads to a substitution, with Quaresma coming off and Joao Moutinho entering the fray.

 GOAL for Portugal!!!! Quaresma at last shows what he can do, dribbling past his marker brilliantly and crossing perfectly for that man Makukula to head confidently into the net. What a debut for the Maritimo striker!

Portugal win two corners in quick succession, with Makukula coming close.

Quaresma is next to try his luck, firing in an effort with the outside of his right foot but the strike goes wide.

Ronaldo causes more panic with a strong run down the right flank. The keeper again does well to cut out the danger.

More excellent play by Makukula! the striker beats his marker on the edge of the box and fires an effort towards the net, but the ball drifts wide.

Makukula again does well, this time winning the ball on the wing and swinging over a cross. Deco gets on the end of it and hits a sizzling volley just past the post.

Another good run from Ronaldo wins a free kick after a good combination with club team-mate, Nani. Makukula comes close twice with headers in quick succession. His first effort is deflected for corner, his second is cleared off the line.

Dangerous free kick for Kazakhstan. A well hit daisy cutter goes a couple of metres wide.

Brilliant run by Ronaldo down the right flank forces home goalkeeper Loriya into a fine diving stop to cut out his low cross.

Another substitution for Portugal. On comes Maritimo striker Makukula for Hugo Almeida. The Congo-born striker was on holiday with his familiy in Brussels on Saturday when he got the call to join the Portugal squad. Could the tall striker be the man to break the deadlock?

Flavio Murtoso sends on Nani for Maniche. Portugal now have three of their wing wonders, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma and Nani on the pitch.

Ten minutes gone in the second half and Portugal have failed to create a single chance in this second period. Nani, Makukula and Joao Moutinho intensify their warm-up exercises.

Dangerous cross from Miguel but Almeida arrives a fraction late and misses his header.

Quaresma is not having the best of nights but credit to him as he keeps seeking the ball. After swapping flanks the Porto man wins a dangerous free kick. Veloso swings in the cross but the ball skims off Carvalho's head and goes harmlessly wide.

Quaresma produces another woeful cross when well placed. Nani starts to warm up on the sidelines...

Half time whistle goes. Portugal dominated the opening 45 minutes and produced several chances in the opening half hour. Kazakhstan looked more comfortable as the match neared the interval, and have looked threatening at times. The longer the match remains goalless the harder it will become for Portugal.

Quaresma played in by a superb Deco ball. Again "Harry Potter", as he is known in Portugal because of his magic tricks, produces a desperately disappointing effort, swinging what is neither a cross nor a shot high over the bar.

Kuchma hits a free kick from fully 40 yards towards Ricardo's net. The defender got tremendous power into the effort but Ricardo calmly watched the ball fly wide.

 Yellow card for Smakov for a supposed foul on Ronaldo. Harsh.

Better from Quaresma. The winger swings in his cross with the outside of his foot but the keeper does well to collect it.

As on Saturday Quaresma is getting no joy on the left wing. Interim boss Flavio Murtoso takes advantage of a break in play to have a word with the Porto winger.

 Maniche loses the ball in midfield, fouls his opponent in trying to recuperate it and is shown the yellow card.

Maniche comes close with a superb 30-yard effort! The goalkeeper is beaten but the ball flies centimetres over the crossbar.

After a furious opening period from Portugal the home team have done well to stem the waves of Portuguese attacks.

Ronaldo goes on a typical high-speed jinking run. He beats two defenders and bursts into the box but he can't get past a third adversary.

Corner for Portugal that Ricardo Carvalho heads towards goal but the effort is deflected over the bar for another corner. The ball is played out to Miguel whose rocket-shot is blocked by a defender.

Maniche plays a wonderful 40-yard pass to Ronaldo. The ball is played back to the onrushing Maniche who fires in a long-distance effort that whistles past the post.

Miguel Veloso hits the free-kick well, forcing Loriya into an excellent diving stop at the foot of the post. From the resulting corner Ronaldo flicks on for Ricardo Carvalho to head just over. Portugal look keen to strike early.

Ricardo Carvalho comes out of defence and plays through Ronaldo. The Manchester United winger shimmies past two players and is brought down on the edge of the box. Good opportunity for Portugal.

Kazakhstan break rapidly and work another good crossing opportunity, but Ricardo again cuts out the danger. The home team are soaking up the pressure but look dangerous on the counter-attack.

Deco plays an excellent throughball to Almeida who is through on goal but tackled as he is about to pull the trigger and the chance is gone.

Almeida close to putting Portugal ahead! Almeida latches on to a superb throughball from Quaresma and puts the ball in the net, but the strike is ruled out for offside. TV replays show the decision was correct... by inches.

Opening moments confined to midfield in a packed stadium. Kazakhstan provide the first moment of danger with a swift break down the left flank but Ricardo comfortably pouches the cross.

Portugal name an unchanged line-up following the 2-0 win in Azerbaijan on Saturday after Simao fails to shake off injury. A similar result will set Portugal up nicely for qualification to their 5th successive major tournament.
