In-form Nacional and Naval cancel each other out
Nacional 1-1 Naval
In-form teams Nacional and Naval played out a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Engenheiro Rui Alves in Madeira on Sunday afternoon. Rodrigo Silva put the home side into the lead, only for Tiago Fraga to equalise before the break.
Nacional were riding on a four-game winning streak in the Liga heading into the match, while Naval were tied for third spot in the standings.
Nacional got on the scoreboard first as they converted their first opportunity of the game in the 14th minute as Rodrigo Silva took full advantage of a blunder by Naval’s Paulao to latch onto the ball and strike it across goalkeeper Taborda and into the net.
Naval hit back less than 20 minutes later. Nacional’s Fernando Cardozo reciprocated the favour by committing a crass error as he let Carlitos get past him and feed the ball to Tiago Fraga, who knew what to do with the ball when he received it.
Fraga was looking for his second two minutes later when his cross-shot forced Nacional goalkeeper Diego to push the ball wide for a corner.
The second half was a let-down after the lively first period. The only talking point was when Naval’s Paulao was sent off in injury time when he collected his second yellow of the game.
A game to forget for the defender after making the mistake that led to the Nacional goal and he is now set to miss Naval’s next game at home to the other Madeira team, Maritimo.
Carlos Brito, Nacional coach:
“The result is acceptable. Nacional did not deserve to lose, and we did not deserve to win. Collectively the team did not function against a side that was confident and always defended well.”
“We used and abused direct football when we had men on the wings and we could have played using them. The players know that much more is needed than what was produced, but they gave everything to win.”
Rogerio Goncalves, Naval coach:
“It was not a game that was well played by either team. Nacional started well, but afterwards, in spite of our adversary having more ball possession, we controlled the game. With the exception of their goal Nacional did not create any opportunities.”
“We could have finished off some counter-attacks in a different manner, and the better chances of the game were ours. I accept the result because it’s important that we got a point. It was a very tactical game that did not live up to expectations in the way the two teams played football here.”
