Deco wants another winner’s medal

“Euro 2004 experience will help us”

Portugal’s midfield maestro Deco has his eyes firmly fixed on adding yet another winner’s medal to his bulging collection.

In the last four seasons Deco has won four championships (two in Portugal, two in Spain), two Champions League titles, the UEFA Cup and a Portuguese Cup.

Now the Barcelona star is looking to top off his incredible haul of trophies with the ultimate prize for any footballer.

“We intend to do the best we possibly can at the World Cup and the best is without doubt to win it. We know it won’t be easy, there are several very good teams, but our spirit is to do our best.”

The Brazilian born midfielder, who earned the nickname the magician at Porto, believes Portugal’s experience at Euro 2004 will stand them in good stead going into the tournament.

“I think we can draw on the experience of the Euro. Despite starting badly and losing the final, we enjoyed a good campaign. At the World Cup we realise that starting with a win will make things much easier.”

Deco confessed that he had not made any bet with Brazilian superstar and midfield partner at Barcelona Ronaldinho, but has done so with Mexican team-mate Marquez.

“We’re in the same group. We’ve joked about it and hope that when we meet in the final group match we are both qualified. Both Mexico and us want to get to the last match without needing points.”

Given Deco’s conquests this season, should he enjoy a good World Cup he could be in line to pick up another award – that of the World Player of the Year. However, the former Porto star maintains his modest demeanour and leaves no doubt as to the silverware he really wants.

“I’ve never played to win individual awards. I prefer to win championships or the Champions League than this award. Of course, any player would like to win it, but it’s not my goal.”

“If I could choose between this award or winning a World Cup, I’d prefer the World Cup.”
