Portugal under-21s win Vale do Tejo tournament
Portugal 3-0 Sweden
Portugal’s U21 team won the Vale do Tejo tournament yesterday by beating Sweden 3-0 in the final, thanks to goals scored by FC players loaned out to Leixoes, Vieirinha and Paulo Machado.
Coach Rui Cacador recalled Sporting duo Joao Moutinho and Miguel Veloso to midfield and their experience helped Portugal dominate the match from start to finish.
Impressive winger Vieirinha opened the scoring in the 16th minute after an excellent pass from Veloso.
The home fans had to wait until the second half to see more goals as Paulo Machado bagged a brace, slotting home after being teed up by Saleiro and Joao Moutinho, respectively.
“We controlled the game well and did not make mistakes,” said a satisfied Cacador after the match. “It was a good victory, but maybe the scoreline was a bit harsh on Sweden.”
Everton midfielder Manuel Fernandes was voted MVP of the two-day tournament.
