Carlos Queiroz has been appointed Portugal’s head coach for the next four years.
The Mozambique-born Queiroz will be officially presented on Wednesday, but said on Friday he was “proud” and “honoured” to accept the invitation for a second stint as Portugal’s coach.
The highly respected former Sporting and Real Madrid boss was widely tipped for the job ever since Luiz Felipe Scolari announced he would leave the post after five years.
Queiroz was at the helm of the national team from 1991-1994. He also famously guided the country to two World Youth Cup triumphs, nurturing what would become known as the “Golden Generation”, including the likes of Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Fernando Couto.
“Since Gilberto Madail [head of the Portuguese Football Federation] first made contact with me, I was receptive to embrace this huge challenge,” said Queiroz.
“Although the Federation and I have evolved a lot in the intervening years, I still know my way around the place to help me integrate quickly and implement my strategy.”
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was disappointed to lose his right-hand man, but had words of praise for the coach who helped take United back to the pinnacle of European football.
“I knew when Portugal came in for him that it was going to be difficult for us. It’s always disappointing to lose good men and Carlos was a good man. He was honest and very loyal to me. He was also a very good coach who brought a lot of initiatives that we have acted upon in recent years,” said Ferguson.

mourinho really is the chosen one. i dream af the day when he manages portugal. i'm sure only he can drive portuguese team to victory. only he knows how to manage the team mentality

jamakukula, i agree with you. simao shouldn't be in starting 11. that was one of scolari's mistakes...

I said it a few times, POrtugal needed to hire Lippi just listen to what he says in this interview, excatly what portugal needs to understand

Okay, I'm looking forward to seeing what Queiroz brings to the table. Hopefully he's not as predictable as Scolari. I say replace Ricardo, give Simao a pep talk and definetly change your tactics. As for Ronaldo, he IS one of the best players in the world. That kid has much more to give to this game and his national team. I also think that we did have a great team this year and they could have went all the way but there was just one thing in their way and his name was Scolari (in my opinion). The Germans said it themselves before that final game, Portugal is predictable and we can thank Scolari for that. I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing to bring in Queiroz but if he doesn't work out, please get rid of him right away and maybe we'll see Mourinho as our future coach("the chosen one")....and then the World & Euro cup will absolutly be ours!!! Forca Portugal!!!
P.S. As for Lippi. Portugal doesn't need shitty, sloppy 2nd's from any shitty teams..
Thanks for hearing me out :)

What's all this crapping all over Queiroz and they guy hasn't even coached one game yet. I just love Azzurri fans how they mask their fear by trying to convince everyone that their teams suck.
Italy were horrible this summer, just horrible, especially for WC champs who, basically, had the same team from two years ago. Did the forumla work? Why won't Queiroz work?
Real is a circus and no more was it when Florentino Perez was the boss. Playes were free to do whatever they wanted, therefore Queiroz was thrown under a bus. Despite having his line-up mandated by the front office, he managed to have Real atop of the table mid-way through the year and guided the team to the knockout stages of the CL - this was after begging Perez to not sell Makelele and only getting Beckham in return.
What else - Portugal and Ronaldo divers? Which nationality do you think created the damn sterotype? That's right, ol' true blue. Totti never dives? He's gets a jersey tug, stops running altogether and throws his arms in the air. What - that's never happened? Do you want to satrt with Toni and Cassano?
Ronaldo does need to grow up, but I bet you'd love to have him in your team. He's 23 and scored 42! When he gets his head on straight, imagine what he will do.
Anyway, everyone has their team and that's cool, but writing off Portugal is just stupid.
16/07/2008 18:32
If Carlos can get through the FPF's politics and be allowed to place the best team forward then yes it may happen but until then we will have to wait for that elusive trophy.
In addition he will need to transform the big name players from being head cases and start playing some serious futbol. ie. RONALDO loose the attitude you are not even close yet to being Eusebio. Last find us a striker please.
16/07/2008 17:50
Finally there is a normal coach. hopefully the era of putting simao into starting line is over

Mike - Woodbridge
First of all Portugal has never really had a team like they do now, I know they had the golden generation which Queiroz as coach but in my opinion Queiroz didn't fail as National coach in 91-93 with Figo, Costa and Pinto (golden generation). These players were all young kids in their first round of national play and were tied with Italy in points for qualification with their final game against the Azzuri in Italy with the Italians holding the tie breaker on aggregates. Final score I can't remember it may have been a draw but regardless the team was inexperienced. Anyone feel free to correct me if I have this wrong, I can't remember as I was much younger and don't feel like looking it up......
His quick stint in Real Madrid was mostly due to the President of Madrid and his desire to bring in star players and selling others without consulting the coach. This ultimately wasn't a formula to win and too much pressure was put on the president for his moves and of course the escape goat was Queiroz. Star players put together hardly ever win championships.

Part 2
As for ManU, some say he had all the power in ManU and was the mastermind. While you can't give him all the credit, I do believe most of the credit is deserved. Ask any ManU fan which it worst losing Queiroz or losing Ronaldo and I'll bet it’s a close poll that goes to show his worth to the fans and the club as they were offering him pay raises and trying to convince him that he may be the next coach of ManU in order to stick around.
As for Lippi how does he command respect? His team was calling him out and questioning his decisions on starters, his dressing room was divided. Lippi isn't Portugal’s answer and I would be furious if they went in that direction. Italy looked lousy this year and you want that coach!!!
As for Ronaldo, it almost impossible to argue about him. People either like him or hate him, how can you think he's not the best player "this year", he won a double double plus being the first midfielder in English history to break 40 goals, leading the champions league in goals and all the other awards he was won this year....lol
Just remember his game is changing and he is only 23yrs old, he's really become a smarter player and doesn't try to do it all by himself anymore.
15/07/2008 22:13
Part 2....Ronaldo is by far the biggest wimp out there. I am sick of this guy. He has no loyalty to anything, his team mates cant trust trust him now, Manu has given this guy everything, the money, Alex F took care of the WC 2006 situation, the fans love him, he has everything going for him and........he walks out. nice, if i was a manu fan i would never want this guy back, see ya.
I have never seen a guy raise his arms in disappointment as much as he does, he always looks like he is about to cry whenever he gets fouled, hardly plays any defense, he is not the best plyer in the world not by a long shot, that belongs to players like Kaka, Cannavaro, Lampard, Ballack, etc. Ronaldo is only the worlds most talented player not the best.
get rid of him from the national team, because to win big things we need playesr who can perform when it counts, not a players who can only score & produce in indifferent games, most of his goals came against bottom feeders. Can anyone mention to me ONE good game (when it really mean something) he has played for Portugal, I was at every game at WC 2006 He was invisible versus Holland (granted he only played like 20 minutes) England, was he even on the field against France???
mhy 2 cents, thanks for listening
15/07/2008 22:12
Sorry but, No, Querioz will not succeed!
He has never succeeded at the highest level as Head Coach, he already failed as portugal head coach & he failed miserably at Real where he had the best players in the world playing for him. He is a good tactitian but not so much defensively, which is where portugal need help. He is a good no 2 man & thats it. There is a big difference from assisstant coach to head coach. He is not a motivator at all, players at ManU never speak highly of him. I have heard some people say is was the driving force behind ManU glory this season .....BULLSHIT. I think if you ask any real ManU fan / player they would tell you the same thing. Alex Ferguson is the head coach the leader etc. the players play for him not Queroz, plus ManU had much more success in the yers leading up to his arrival than they have since he was there. We should have done everything possible to hire Lippi (he would have come if we opened up the war chest $$$$ nobody says no to big cash) Portugal doent need a tactitian, we need someone who will create a respectful atmosphere, one where players are accountable for their actions, instill some respect for the game, get rid of panzies, cry babies, divers, I am sick of the complaining, diving, spectacles that many of the players in the seleccao seem to produce
15/07/2008 17:52
I just have faith in this man quieroz
i think hes kool in any comdition and my hert says that he can lead portugal to world cup glory in 2010....forca portugal !!!!1
15/07/2008 13:25
Danny,
All I can say is Portugal didn’t deserve to go any further in Euro ’08 and had some really bad performances from some players but with that said if it was Italy and Luca Toni was thrown down in the box like Nuno Gomez was against Germany that would be a penalty. Remember Australia, Grosso tripped on his shoe laces….lol
Even the Fifa president apologized to Australia; don’t come rip Portugal in a Portuguese forum. Your comments display a lack of class, good luck with your career at McDonalds.

At this time in Portuguese soccer, Queiroz in my opinion is the best choice. There is no one better I can think of that can help use Portugal’s youth, he recognizes and develops young talent and plays creative attacking football. As long as he can tighten up the defense a little more and not play the predictable brand of Scolari football I am in complete support for Queiroz. The players got him this job and they will perform under him.
Concerns about the team:
Striker – As good as Nuno Gomez played, I would give Postiga a serious look. Forget Almeida, he may be tall but he’s too slow and can’t do much with the ball. One thing I don’t want to see is Queresma, Nani on the wings and Ronaldo as a striker. I think you will just waste Ronaldo up the middle. Ronaldo – Postiga/Nuno Gomez – Nani is the ideal lineup for me.
LB – Well I have been saying it throughout the tournament, not putting Caneira (True left foot) on the squad was a mistake. However there are some options in Miguel (No left foot), Veloso, Pereirinha, or Antunes. Not quite sure who I would put, Antunes LB in Roma with minimum appearances or Veloso is another option who can play a little LB. Good luck Queiroz on this one.
GK- Only one for me and that’s Rui Patricio, he’s tall, young and the future GK of Portugal. So good that he will only last 1 more season in Sporting before a big club picks him up. Quim would be my selection as a second keeper and I would give me a serious look at being #1.

WE ARE WELL OVERDUE FOR A CELEBRATION,WE THE PORTUGESE COMMUNITY IN THE SUBURB OF PETERSHAM SYDNEY AUSTRALIA ARE WAITING FOR THE DAY TO PARTY AFTER A CHAMPIONCHIP WIN. CARLOS GOOD LUCK WE ARE BEHIND YOU.
15/07/2008 09:58
we will do very well with carlos queiros experience and respect he knowos who to win another exiting years haed for portuguese footbal good my adored portugal
14/07/2008 23:30
Hello, I'm not Portuguese but I'm fond of the country & the national team. I haven't ever really seen Quim play however, can someone outline his strengths and weakness'? Whenever I've seen Benfica play he looks like Ricardo to me, I.E. he doesn't look like he has much physical presense & he isnt the best on crosses but he is a good shot stopper. What is Daniel Fernandes like? He's supposed to be highly regarded
14/07/2008 22:26
Hey Danny,
What did Buffon do for Italy this past summer? Did he at all help that shitty Italian squad? You think lightning will strike twice with Lippi? Italy had a great WC'06 and leave it at that, but that was two years ago and you see the difference it makes? Although, I agree that Ricardo is bad, but don't bash the team because you know Portugal have way more to offer than Italy does in the near future, and that scares you.
Anyway, Queiroz is a modern football man who will implent new ideas and a winning mentality within the Portugal team. Portugal have been consistent in the last few years, but hopefully Queiroz will make Portugal take that next step where they overcome the likes of Germany, Italy and France. Time will tell, but our chances are just as good as anyone else's.
FORCA PORTUGAL!!!!!
14/07/2008 18:23
Joe, the 3rd GK at Chelsea is Hilario. Nice story about how he filled in for the injured GKs and became a cult hero but he is not starting material. I think he is over 30 and not even close to Ricardo level. He is not the solution.
David in NYC, you make too much sense. I enjoy reading your comments and ability to focus on the key issues.
I share the same concerns.
- Quim is probably our best GK option and I think it is time to give him a chance. He was close to being the no 1 until back in the early 2000s he banned for doping.
- I think it is time for Ricardo to go but I think a bigger issue is def mid and LB. The two incompetent culprits Petit and Paul F have taken a deservered backlash.
- Solutions for LB in my mind would be to put Veloso in the position and play him like a Hargreaves on the RB side at ManU. Veloso is a versatile player with defensisve and offenseive skills. He is much more athletic than the uninspiring Paulo F.
- Def mid for now given there is little time probably a Meira or Meirles. I'm not big on Meirles as he reminds me of Peit with his long ineffective shooting but him seems to be a safe stop gap measure until maybe someone else steps up.
The Denmark game has the makings of the game against the Swiss. I'm hoping for a draw. We'll be challenged to score. I'm not sure how well Simao, Quar, and Nani will do in a away game.
14/07/2008 17:05
Anyone know anything about the Portuguese goalie at Chelsea? I think he's #3 in the depth chart, but he did play a little when Cech and the back-up to Cech went down to injury.
14/07/2008 16:30
I'm not sure how I feel about Queiroz so I'm keeping an open mind. I think he'll have his hands full with a tough WC qualifying group so he won't have much time to find his legs.
Denmark and Sweden will be tough games this fall and it looks like Ronaldo will not be available for at least the Den game. Portugal was unable to beat Poland, Serbia or Finland during the 08 qualifiers and I would rank both Den and Swe ahead of those countries, so while I'm cautiously optimistic about the future, I'm nervous about the qualifying stages.
I agree with virtually everyone that Ricardo has to go, but I'm not sure who the right option is if Quim isn't healthy. Seems too soon for Patricio. I'm far more worried about LB and the DMF role that Petit so poorly filled.
14/07/2008 16:19
If Queiroz is the real architect behind man utd, then we're in great hands. He'll rectify a lot of our attacking problems, and he'll find the correct goalie for us. Can't wait to see our friendly in august.
14/07/2008 15:17
I think Quieroz is the best choice for Portugal. His defensive game plans will work well with Portugals backfield... I'm very excited about the World Cup!
14/07/2008 14:51
I don't know anything about what Queiroz did with Portugal or at Madrid. I've only been a fan (fanatical I might add) of Portuguese soccer/soccer in general since Euro 2004.
All I can say is that I love the way Manchester United plays (attacking flowing football with numbers in the attacking box). Too many times I see a Portugal team with a lone man (striker) in the box without much support. I know United are full of attacking talent, but, so are we! I'm excited to see if Queiroz can bring the same strategic attacking prowess to Portugal that they had at Man U beyond just the ball control (that we are already strong at).
Regarding some comments about how we'll never win a major title, I disagree. I think a change in coach was necessary, and I believe we have all the talent in the world to get it done. Spain was thought to be a team that could never win. Well guess what, they did. Yeah they have some unbelievable talent up front and at midfield, but we have the same potential at those positions. Now, if we could just get a goalkeeper like Spain has lol
13/07/2008 23:06
I sure hope so. I can't wait to see who Queiroz chooses as 1st and 2nd captain, and 1st choice goalkeeper.
I'd be satisfied if Queiroz can set up a friendly with Greece and make Portugal dominate the game and at least win by a 2 goal difference.

we're not stuck with Ricardo, we have 2 other options.
13/07/2008 18:06
a different coach doesnt change portugals shitty players... ex:paulo ferreira, ricardo, nuno gomes... and in any case... if u guys had a goalie like buffon portugal would be better off. Too bad, portugal is stuck with crappy and old ricardo. FORZA ITALIA
13/07/2008 16:55
Quieroz is a brilliant strategist. He will force teams to play defensive soccer. Nani not Ronaldo will be the star in his system. Hugo ALmeida will start as the striker. A similiar Man United Rooney Ronaldo setup will be the formation. 4-4-2- or 4-4-1.
13/07/2008 14:13
Great choice in my opinion he has all the qualities we have been missing.Plus he has the respect of the players as he has done alot in the game.
I personally feel we will never win a major tournament as we don't have what it takes but it's a step in the right direction.
Lets just hope he has the b@lls to drop useless players like Ricardo, Nuno Gomes and Paulo Ferreira.
We have the telent all we need is a winning mind set lets hope come 2010 we see a natinal team prepared to do all to defend the nations pride as it was lacking in the euro's.
13/07/2008 13:55
I still dont think they will win a title, portugal lacks a Luis Figo.A coach can only do so much,im portuguese but im also realistic.
13/07/2008 13:50
The perfect selection for the new coach!!! Queiroz knows more than any other person how to put Ronaldo Quaresma Moutinho Nani Pepe Meireles Bosingwa Miguel and Portugal's other stars in a winning team.
Scolari was good but I think Queiroz will have more success still.
Portugal has the players and now they have the right coach.
World Cup 2010 is ours!!!
Força Portugal!
