Pacos spoil Pacheco return

Pacos de Ferreira 2-0 Boavista

Pacos de Ferreira beat Boavista 2-0 in the final match of round eight last night to make it an unhappy start for Jaime Pacheco in his third spell as head coach of the Porto club.

A goal in each half from Edson and Didi got Pacos back to winning ways after four matches without a victory.

Boavista began well and on 16 minutes a Ze Manel cross was met by Ricardo Sousa, but the midfielder shot wide. Four minutes later the home team took the lead when some hesitant defending from Boavista was punished by Edson, who fired the loose ball past William.

Boavista came back strongly and missed a golden chance to equalise soon after. Ricardo Sousa swung a free-kick to the far post where central defender Ricardo Silva, completely unmarked, headed wide from five metres out.

Close to half time Pacos had a lucky let-off when striker Ronny, on defensive duty, clearly handled the ball inside the box, but the referee missed the incident and Boavista’s penalty claims fell on deaf ears.

The home side took control of the match in the second half, and the Liga’s joint top scorer, Ronny, shot just over the bar in the 46th minute.

Apart from an acrobatic effort from Linz on the hour mark, Boavista rarely looked like getting back into the match and it came as no surprise when Didi doubled the lead for Pacos on 75 minutes.

After being set up be Edson, the skilful Brazilian forward produced a sublime lob over William to ensure the three points.

Pacos next travel to Madeira to take on Nacional, while Boavista will be looking to end a run of three straight defeats when they host rock-bottom Aves on Saturday.
