Pauleta joy at reaching milestone
Portuguese striker matches PSG goalscoring record
Pedro Pauleta has spoken of his immense joy at reaching the 100-goal mark for Paris Saint-Germain, and in doing so becoming the joint top goalscorer in the club’s history.
The Azorean got both goals on Wednesday as PSG beat Montpellier 2-0 at the Parc Des Prince, just days after getting a brace in his side’s 3-2 home defeat to champions Lyon in Ligue 1.
“Obviously it’s a great moment, to have managed to score 100 goals in four years and a few months,” he said. “I dedicate this to all the supporters - they deserve it as they supported us throughout - to the players and to all the people who have helped me score these goals.”
“I have been chasing this record. It was one of my aims for this season. It’s a source of pride and honour.”
“It was a difficult game against a Montpellier team that caused us plenty of problems. This was our first home win of the season. That will do us a lot of good. The team gave their all to win the game.”
Four goals in two games will increase the pressure on manager Paul Le Guen to restore Pauleta to the starting line-up on a permanent basis, and the veteran striker was asked whether his recent good form was a pointer for his boss.
“I’m not here to send messages to anyone,” he said. “I’m just here to help Paris Saint-Germain until the last day of my contract. I have always been the same, continued to work, to remain the same professional and the most important is to make the team win.”
