England - Premiership

Chelsea break unbeaten home record

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea got off to a winning start in the Premiership, with the Blues setting a new English record for matches unbeaten at home. Ricardo Carvalho played the full match in central defence in a 3-2 win over Birmingham. Chelsea have now gone 64 matches unbeaten at Stamford Bridge in domestic football.

The result means that last season’s runners up steal an early march on champions Manchester United, who were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Reading. Cristiano Ronaldo started and played the full match for United, while Nani was introduced as a second-half substitute.

Pedro Mendes played the full 90 minutes in midfield for Portsmouth as they drew 2-2 at newly promoted Derby County. Ricardo Vaz Te was issued a start on the opening day for Bolton Wanderers, but the 20-year-old was taken off at half time as his side went down 3-1 at home to Newcastle.

Luis Boa Morte was replaced at half time as West Ham were well beaten at home, 2-0 by Manchester City. Nuno Valente was an unused substitute in Everton’s 2-1 home win over Wigan, while Ricardo Rocha watched from the bench as his Tottenham side produced a poor performance to lose 1-0 to Sunderland.

Sergio Pinto was given a start for his league debut for Hannover, but was taken off ten minutes into the second half as his side lost 1-0 at home to Hamburg. Alex Domingos was an unused substitute for Wolsfburg’s 3-1 home loss to Arminia Bielefeld.
