England - Premiership

Anfield clash ends all square

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea came away from their Premiership match against rivals Liverpool at Anfield with a somewhat fortunate draw. The Blues, who were without the injured Ricardo Carvalho and did not select Paulo Ferreira, were awarded a hugely controversial penalty in the second half, which Frank Lampard converted to level at 1-1.

Manchester United lost further ground on those at the top after losing to city rivals Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Cristiano Ronaldo missed the match through suspension, while Nani started but was substituted during the second half for the champions.

Nuno Valente started his first competitive match for over six months, but could not prevent his Everton side from losing their 100% record with a 1-0 loss at Reading. Tottenham picked up their first points of the season as Ricardo Rocha played the full match in a 4-0 hammering of Derby at White Hart Lane.

Pedro Mendes was unfit for Portsmouth’s 3-1 win over Bolton, who left Ricardo Vaz Te out of their squad. Ricardo Batista was Fulham’s backup goalkeeper for their 2-1 home loss to Middlesbrough. Luis Boa Morte was left on the bench as West Ham won 1-0 at Birmingham.

France - Ligue 1

Goalless draws

Pedro Pauleta’s midweek goal was not enough to earn him a starting place for Paris Saint-Germain’s trip to Metz. The Azorean came on for the final 25 minutes with the match goalless, but could not find a breakthrough as both sides had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Marco Ramos made his first Ligue 1 appearance of the season for Lens, playing the full 90 minutes as his side were also held to a scoreless draw, at home against Valenciennes.

Sergio Pinto was left on the bench by Hannover as the team won 2-1 away at Karlsruhe, while Alex was an unused substitute for Wolfsburg’s 3-1 victory at Duisburg.
