England - Premiership

Nani continues to shine

Cristiano Ronaldo was back in action for Manchester United as the champions made it three wins in a row with another slender 1-0 victory at Everton. Ronaldo played the full ninety minutes, while Nani came on as a first half substitute and created the 83rd minute winner for Nemanja Vidic with an in-swinging corner.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea failed to score for the second match running and have picked up just one point from their last two games after a frustrating 0-0 home draw with Blackburn. Paulo Ferreira was an unused substitute, as Ricardo Carvalho continues to miss out through injury.

Ricardo Rocha watched from the bench as Tottenham lost a 1-0 half time lead to go down 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the North London derby. Elsewhere in the capital, Luis Boa Morte came on for the final 13 minutes of West Ham’s 3-0 home victory over Middlesbrough.

Injured midfielder Pedro Mendes sat out Portsmouth’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool, Ricardo Vaz Te was not in the Bolton squad for their 1-0 defeat at Birmingham and Ricardo Batista was not selected by Fulham for a 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.

France - Ligue 1

Pauleta benched

Pedro Pauleta’s recent complaints at lack of first team football failed to gain the Portuguese striker any action for PSG in their trip to Monaco. The Azorean was not called from the bench, as the side from the capital won 2-1, surprising one of Ligue 1’s early pacesetters.

Marco Ramos was substituted late on after being booked in Lens’ much needed 1-0 home win over Nancy.

Germany - Bundesliga

Stuttgart back on track

Fernando Meira’s Stuttgart recorded a much needed win on Saturday evening, beating Cottbus 3-0 at home to climb up to 9th in the Bundesliga. The Portuguese captained the German champions, who won thanks to second half goals from Cacau, Ewerthon and Mario Gomez.

Werder Bremen’s poor start to the new season continued as Hugo Almeida started in their 3-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. Sergio Pinto was an unused substitute for Hannover’s 3-2 win over Bochum, while Alex was not involved for Wolfsburg as they were beaten 2-1 at Hertha Berlin.

Italy - Serie A

Juventus stunned at home

Early leaders Roma maintained their 100% record at the start of the new Italian season with a 2-0 win at Reggina, although new Portuguese signing Antunes was not selected in the match squad for his debut. Reggina’s Portuguese defender Miguel Garcia was not in his side’s match squad.

Juventus suffered their first defeat of the season, surprisingly beaten 1-0 at home by Udinese. Jorge Andrade played in the Bianconeri defence, with fellow Portuguese Tiago coming on ten minutes into the second period.

Champions Inter moved into second place in Serie A following a 2-0 home win over Catania, with Luis Figo playing 65 minutes before being replaced. Costinha was not in the Alatanta squad as the Bergamo outfit managed a respectable 2-2 draw at Fiorentina.

Fernando Couto was in the Parma defence for their 1-1 home draw with Cagliari, while Jose Vidigal played the full ninety minutes as Livorno’s drew 1-1 with Genoa.

Spain - La Liga

Real looking strong

Defending champions Real Madrid have nine points from their first three games after another victory in La Liga on Saturday night. Portuguese defender Pepe did not play, however, as his new club beat Almeria 3-1 at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona selected Deco in midfield as they came away from Osasuna with a 0-0 draw, while fellow title challengers Sevilla played Duda for a little over an hour in a 4-1 Andalucia derby win over Recreativo Huelva. Recre started both Carlos Martins and Silvestre Varela for the match, while Roberto Beto came on as a late substitute.

Manuel Fernandes was handed his full Valencia debut in Los Ches’ slender 2-1 home win over Valladolid. The former Benfica man was taken off after an hour at the Mestalla, while Miguel was left on the bench and the injured Marco Caneira missed out.

Atletico Madrid’s stuttering start to the season continued with a 1-1 away draw with newly promoted Murcia. Maniche played the full ninety minutes in midfield at the Vicente Calderon, while Ze Castro was left on the bench.

Ricardo kept goal as Real Betis went down to a 1-0 defeat at Deportivo, while Jose Nunes was in defence for Mallorca as they lost 1-0 at home to Villarreal, who did not include Tomane Nunes and Feliciano Condesso.

There were no league fixtures in Greece this weekend.

Holland

Manuel da Costa’s struggles with fitness saw him miss champions PSV’s 1-0 home victory over Vitesse Arnhem, which lifted them up into third place in the Eredivisie.

Poland

Reigning champions Zaglebie Lubin moved up to fifth in the Polish topflight with a 2-2 draw at Ruch Chorzow, with Rui Miguel coming off the bench to play the final twenty minutes.

Romania

CFR Cluj went top of the Romanian league after a 2-0 win at Farul, with Tony, Ricardo Cadu, Dani and Antonio Semedo all starting for Cluj. UTA Arad selected Bruno Simao for a 1-0 away win at Universitatea Craiova.

Russia

Russian Cup semi-final week meant that Dynamo Moscow, who have a three-man Portuguese contingent and sit 4th in the Premier League, were given the weekend off as they prepare for the final seven games of the season.

Scotland

Pedro Moutinho was on the scoresheet as Falkirk drew 1-1 with Hibernian on Friday night in the Scottish Premier League. Filipe Morais was taken off by Hibernian at half time with his team 1-0 up, but Moutinho levelled for the hosts less than two minutes after the restart.

Hearts enjoyed an upturn in fortunes with a shock 4-2 home win over Rangers on Saturday, although Portuguese duo Jose Goncalves and Bruno Aguiar were not involved.

Serbia

Partizan Belgrade made it five wins from five at the start of the new Serbian season with a 3-1 home victory over Napredak Krusevac on Sunday evening, with Almani Moreira again starting in attack for the league leaders.

Champions Red Star, with Portuguese Joao Lucas in midfield, were held to a 0-0 draw at Borac Cacak and stay seven points behind Partizan with one game in hand.

Switzerland

The early rounds of the Schweizer Pokal took centre stage in Switzerland this weekend, with the country’s big sides all making light work of their less illustrious opponents.

Portuguese forward Carlitos played his part as FC Basel hammered lower league FC Léchelles 9-0 on Sunday. The former Benfica man scored twice, getting the opener and number six for his side.

Turkey

Konyaspor endured a horrific evening on Sunday, losing 6-0 at Galatasaray. Midfielder Neca played the full ninety minutes and defender Ze Gomes watched from the bench, as winless Konya slip down to 17th in the Turkcell Süper Lig.

The Falkirk striker appears to finally have recovered from the injuries that had disrupted his career in Scotland, and scored another crucial goal to earn his side a point against Hibernian.
