Chelsea are showing signs of recovering from Jose Mourinho’s departure, with the Blues racking up another win away at Middlesbrough. Both Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira played the full ninety minutes in the Chelsea backline.

Almeida nets again

Hugo Almeida followed up his first international goal last week with the opener in the 58th minute of Werder Bremen’s 3-2 home win over Hertha Berlin. German champions Stuttgart slipped down to 13th in the Bundesliga as, without the suspended Fernando Meira, they went down 4-1 at Hamburg.

Sergio Pinto scored for Hannover in their 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg. The former Aachen forward equalised Marcelinho’s striker to draw his side level on 28 minutes, but Wolfsburg re-took the lead just a minute later, before Hannover again drew level ahead of half time.

Spain - La Liga

Barca stunned

Barcelona’s recent good form came to a halt with a 3-1 defeat at high-flying Villarreal. There was worse news for Deco, who is expected to be out for over a month with a thigh injury. Loc Cules did not lose any ground on leaders Real Madrid, however, as the champions lost 2-1 to Espanyol, with former Porto defender Pepe not included in the squad.

Sevilla record a much-needed win, 2-0 at Levante, with Duda playing the full ninety minutes as the Andalucians move up into 10th in La Liga. Valencia reacted well to the home defeat to Espanyol in their previous match by winning 4-2 away at Deportivo. Miguel played at right-back, while Marco Caneira was fit enough for a place on the bench, but the match came too soon for Manuel Fernandes.

Maniche and Ze Castro both took their place in the Atletico Madrid starling line-up as Los Rojiblancos recorded an impressive 4-0 win over Zaragoza. Major summer signing Simao Sabrosa was not called from the bench for Atletico.

Jose Nunes was in the Mallorca defence for their 2-0 win at Recreativo, who started with Roberto Beto and left Silvestre Varela on the bench. Portugal’s no.1 Ricardo kept goal for Betis’ 1-1 draw with Racing Santander.

Nani

Although Nani has made several crucial contributions to his new side since his summer switch from Sporting, his performance in the champions’ excellent 4-1 victory over Aston Villa was by far his best all-round display in a United shirt.
