England - Premiership

Ronaldo scores

Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the Premiership’s big game, getting the second for Manchester United in their 2-2 draw away at leaders Arsenal. The 22-year-old played the full match, while Nani remained an unused substitute.

Chelsea maintained their good recent form with another win, this time 2-0 at Wigan Athletic, with Ricardo Carvalho playing in the Blues’ defence. Pedro Mendes played the final three minutes of Portsmouth’s sensational 4-1 win away at Newcastle and Luis Boa Morte played the entire match as West Ham conceded in injury time to draw 1-1 at home with Bolton.

France - Ligue 1

Pedro Pauleta’s recent goalscoring form was not enough to earn him a place in the Paris Saint-Germain starting line-up for their trip to Strasbourg. The Azorean was an unused substitute as his side ran out 2-1 winners at La Meinau.

Almeida hits winner

Hugo Almeida continued his impressive recent form with another home goal for Werder Bremen, getting a 37th minute winner as his side beat Hansa Rostock 1-0 at Weserstadion. Champions Stuttgart also won by a goal to nil, Fernando Meira playing in defence in a win at Nurnberg that sees them move up to 11th in the Bundesliga. Sergio Pinto started but was withdrawn late on as Hannover drew 0-0 at Frankfurt.

Italy - Serie A

Champions Inter and Juventus played out a 1-1 draw in Turin on Sunday, with Luis Figo playing just over an hour before being replaced as the Nerazurri lead, only to conceded to Mauro Cameronesi’s equaliser thirteen minutes from time. Tiago remained on the bench for Juve.

Vitorino Antunes was left on the bench by Roma as the side from the capital drew 2-2 at Empoli. Parma’s Fernando Couto (suspension) and injured trio Costinha (Atalanta), Jose Vidigal (Livorno).

Spain - La Liga

Simao scores but Atletico slip up

Barcelona closed the gap on leaders Real Madrid with a 3-0 home win over Ricardo’s Betis, despite the absence of injured midfielder Deco. Los Cules were given the chance to cut the champions’ lead after Real, with Pepe still out injured, beaten 2-0 by Sevilla, who left Duda out.

Simao Sabrosa scored, but was on the losing side, as Atletico Madrid’s good recent form came to an end with a 4-3 home defeat to Villarreal. The former Benfica captain started the match along with Maniche in midfield and scored the second for his side, putting Los Rojiblancos 2-0 up on 25 minutes, only for them to be pegged back to 2-2 before half time and eventually lose to a 90th minute winner.

Ex-Benfica boss Ronald Koeman enjoyed a good start to life at Valencia, the Dutchman overseeing a 2-0 victory at Jose Nunes’ Mallorca. Manuel Fernandes, who worked under Koeman in Lisbon, returned to the starting line-up alongside Marco Caneira, while Miguel was dropped but came on just five minutes in.

Hugo Viana was not involved in Osasuna’s 2-0 home defeat to Getafe, while Roberto Beto, Carlos Martins and Silvestre Varela all started Recreativo’s 2-0 loss away at Athletic Bilbao.

Greece

AEK Athens’ 100% start to the season came to a sudden halt with a shock 2-1 home defeat to Iraklis Saloniki. Geraldo Alves played in defence, while Manu came on in the 78th minute for AEK, who are now two points clear at the top.

In second place are Jose Peseiro’s Panathinaikos, who hammered Levadiakos 4-0 away from home on Sunday evening. Fernando Santos’ PAOK slip down to 10th, however, after the Portuguese selected Daniel Fernandes in goal in their 2-1 loss at Olympiakos.

Holland

Dutch champions PSV slipped down to third with a 2-1 defeat away at Heerenveen. PSV, who recently lost manager Ronald Koeman to Valencia, were without Portuguese defender Manuel da Costa for the match.

Poland

Champions Zaglebie Lubin were 2-1 winners away at Cracovia Krakow on Saturday, a result that sees them move up to 7th in the Polish league. Rui Miguel played the full match in the Zaglebie attack.

Romania

Unbeaten Cluj extended their lead at the top of the Romanian league to eight points with a 2-0 win at Vaslui, starting five Portuguese players in the initial line-up. Nuno Claro kept goal; Ricardo Cadu was in defence; Dani and Andre Leao played in midfield and Antonio Semedo was in attack.

Bruno Simao was on the scoresheet for UTA Arad in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Pandurii. Simao started the match, but was taken off early in the second half, while Edson da Silva was introduced shortly before his compatriot was withdrawn.

Russia

Dinamo Moscow’s final home game of the season ended in defeat, 1-0 at home against Rubin Kazan. Danny played the full match for Dinamo, while Custodio started but was withdrawn on 7 minutes and Cicero was an unused substitute.

Scotland

There was a Portuguese on either side in the Edinburgh derby between Hibernian and Hearts, which finished 1-1. Jose Goncalves started in defence for Hearts, while Filipe Morais played 80 minutes before being replaced by the home side. Pedro Moutinho played in Falkirk’s 2-0 win over Gretna.

Serbia

Leaders Partizan Belgrade were again without Almani Moreira as they dropped points for the second time in four days, following up their midweek draw with another share of the spoils by being held 3-3 at home by Vojvodina Novi Sad.

As a result, city rivals Red Star Belgrade were able to cut the lead at the top with a 1-0 win at Cukaricki Beograd, with Joao Lucas playing the full match in midfield.

Switzerland

FC Basel are still one point clear in Switzerland after a 2-0 home win over Grasshoppers Zurich on Saturday, although they were without influential forward Carlitos. Nelson Ferreira played the full ninety minutes for FC Thun in their 0-0 draw at home against Young Boys.

Turkey

Konyaspor secured only their third win of the season and moved up to 12th with a 1-0 victory at Genclerbirligi. Neca started in midfield before being substituted, while defender Ze Gomes watched from the bench.


Star Performer

Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen)

The former Porto striker is finding the back of the net consistently this season and grabbed the only goal of the game as Bremen beat Hansa Rostock 1-0 to go within two points of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga.
