England - Premiership

Ronaldo at the double

Cristiano Ronaldo moved into double figures for the season, getting a brace to help Manchester United to the top of the Premiership with a 2-0 home victory over Blackburn Rovers. Fellow Portuguese Nani was brought on during the second half by the champions.

Chelsea lost ground on the new leaders after conceding a 90th minute equaliser to draw 1-1 at home against Everton. Nuno Valente was a notable selection in the Toffees’ back four after various struggles with fitness, while Ricardo Carvalho took his place in the heart of the defender for Chelsea, who had gone ahead through Drogba’s 70th minute strike.

Luis Boa Morte played the full ninety minutes as West Ham recovered from last week’s disappointment against Bolton with a 5-0 hammering of Derby County. Pedro Mendes was an unused substitute in Portsmouth’s 0-0 draw at home against Manchester City.

Italy - Serie A

On a weekend that saw three matches called off, Tiago helped Juventus come from 2-0 down to snatch a draw at Parma. The Portuguese midfielder was left on the bench but came on early in the second half after the hosts, who were without Fernando Couto, went into a two-goal lead. Tiago’s free-kick led to Legrottaglie pulling one back, before Iaquinta earned the Bianconeri a point with a 82nd minute equaliser.

Matches involving Inter, Atalanta and Roma were called off, while Jose Vidigal (Livorno) and Miguel Garcia (Reggina) were not in action for their clubs.

Valencia repaired some of the damage from their recent poor form with a 3-0 home win over Murcia. Miguel and Marco Caneira played at right and left full-back respectively, while Manuel Fernandes was surprisingly left out of the squad by his former Benfica manager Ronald Koeman.
