England - Premiership

United and Chelsea win

Manchester United closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to just one point after Cristiano Ronaldo scored in a 4-1 home victory over Derby County. Fellow Portuguese Nani was initially left out of the match squad for the second game running, but was a late selection on the bench after an injury to Owen Hargreaves in the warm-up.

Chelsea also made up some ground with a 2-0 win over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge. Hilario was on the substitutes’ bench for the Blues, who were without Ricardo Carvalho and left Paulo Ferreira out of the match squad.

Portsmouth continue to build on their excellent start to the season, Pedro Mendes playing in midfield in a 3-1 victory against Aston Villa at Villa Park. Luis Boa Morte played the full ninety minutes of West Ham’s 1-0 win at Blackburn.

France - Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain secured a much-needed victory in Ligue 1, beating Auxerre 1-0 away from home, with Pedro Pauleta left out of the match squad by manager Paul le Guen. Defender Marco Ramos was not involved in Lens’ 3-1 home loss to Le Mans.

Germany - Bundesliga

Almeida sees red

Hugo Almeida was sent off on his return from injury as Werder Bremen lost 4-3 away at Hannover, for whom Sergio Pinto played 84 minutes. The Portuguese striker came on for the final ten minutes, but was issued a straight red for shoving an opponent to the ground.

Elsewhere, champions Stuttgart, captained by Fernando Meira, moved to within ten points of the top with a 3-1 home win over Wolfsburg, with Ricardo Costa playing in defence for the visitors.

Italy - Serie A

Pele cameo

Young midfielder Vitor Pele followed up his first start for Inter in midweek with a half hour cameo as the champions hammered Torino 4-0 at the San Siro. Title-chasers Roma were held to a 1-1 draw at Livorno, with Vitorino Antunes on the bench, while Juventus introduced Tiago in the dying minutes of their 1-0 win at home against Atalanta. Fernando Couto was left on the bench by Parma in their 1-0 loss at Napoli.

Spain - La Liga

Top three win

Deco made his return to first team action with Barcelona, coming on at half time to help Los Cules come from behind to beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 at the Nou Camp. The result keeps Barca four points behind leaders Real Madrid, who started Pepe in defence for their 1-0 victory away at Athletic Bilbao.

Atletico Madrid are up to third in La Liga following a 1-0 city derby win over Getafe at the Vicente Calderon. Maniche and Simao Sabrosa both started for Atletico, while Ze Castro was left on the bench in a match that saw four players (two for each side) sent off. Simao set up the winner for Diego Forlan with a perfect run and cross.

Recreativo Huelva followed up last week’s victory with another three points at Levante, with Carlos Martins playing in midfield and Silvestre Varela left on the bench. Duda played a rare ninety minutes for Sevilla in their 3-1 triumph at home against Murcia.

Struggling Valencia were held to a goalless draw at Osasuna, with Miguel playing the full match for Los Ches, while Manuel Fernandes (Valencia) and Hugo Viana (Osasuna) were both unused substitutes. Jose Nunes was in the Mallorca defence for their 3-1 loss at Racing Santander.

Others

Greece

AEK Athens remain top in Greece with a thumping 4-0 home victory over Apollon Kalamaria, with Geraldo Alves playing in defence and Manu left on the bench. Jose Peseiro’s Panathinaikos slipped down to third on goal difference, despite a 1-0 win at Iraklis. Fernando Santos led PAOK, with Daniel Fernandes in goal, to a 2-0 win over Veria FC, which sees them up into sixth.

Holland

Dutch champions PSV were stunned by Roda JC at the Phillips Stadium on Friday evening, losing 4-2 to slip down to second in the Eredivisie. Manuel da Costa was not available for PSV, who trail new leaders Ajax by one point.

Poland

Polish champions Zaglebie Lubin dropped down to 7th place in the league, with Rui Miguel playing 87 minutes for the champions as they were beaten 2-1 by current leaders Wisla Krakow.

Romania

Defender Tony scored one of the goals as CFR Cluj moved 11 points clear at the top of the Romanian Liga with a 3-1 win against Otelul Galati. Cluj started with five Portuguese in their lineup: Nuno Claro was in goal; Tony and Ricardo Cadu played in defence; Dani was in midfield and Antonio Semedo took his place in attack.

Bruno Simao played the full ninety minutes, receiving a yellow card along the way, in UTA Arad’s 1-1 home draw with Vaslui. The result sees Arad drop to second from bottom in the league.

Scotland

Pedro Moutinho was among the goals for Falkirk on Saturday, getting the opener in their 3-0 win over Dundee United. Jose Goncalves played in defence for Hearts as the Jambos lost 2-1 at home to Motherwell.

Serbia

Almani Moreira scored and put in a sensational individual performance for Partizan Belgrade as the Super Liga leaders hammered city rivals OFK 5-1 on Saturday. The Portuguese started the game and added the third for his side, who are four points clear at the top. Second place Red Star won 1-0 at FK Bezanija Belgrade without Joao Lucas.

Switzerland

Leaders FC Basel slumped to a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Neuchatel Xamax in the Swiss Super League. Carlitos was not selected for the starting line-up, but did appear on 65 minutes when his side went a goal down. Nelson Ferreira played the full ninety minutes and set up the first goal for FC Thun in their 2-1 win away at FC Luzern.

Turkey

Neca was on the scoresheet for Konyaspor as the Green Lightnings moved up to 7th in the Turkcell Süper Lig with a 4-2 home win over Manisaspor. The Portuguese midfielder got the third for Konyaspor, who made it five wins from their last six matches.

Almani Moreira (Partizan Belgrade)

The well-travelled forward continues to wow the fans of his new club after his summer switch to Serbia. Moreira scored one and put on a masterful performance as his side ran out 4-1 winners against OFK Beograd.
