England - Premiership

Manchester United clinch title

Portuguese duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani are celebrating clinching the Premiership title with Manchester United after a 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic saw the Red Devils finish top of the pile in England. Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot while Nani was suspended for Alex Ferguson’s side, while nearest challengers Chelsea could only manage a 1-1 draw with Bolton without Portuguese pair Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira.

Everton secured fifth place thanks to a 3-1 win over Newcastle at Goodison Park, with Manuel Fernandes playing a starring role in midfield for the Toffees. Pedro Mendes was handed what many expect to be his last start in the Portsmouth midfield in a 1-0 defeat against Fulham which sees Pompey finish eighth. Luis Boa Morte played the full ninety minutes of West Ham’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

France - Ligue 1

PSG out of relegation zone

Paris Saint-Germain will go into the final day of action in France with their destiny in their own hands after a 1-1 draw at home with St. Etienne was enough to pull them out of the relegation zone. Pedro Pauleta played the full match for PSG, who are one point and two places clear of the bottom three ahead of next week’s trip to Sochaux. Lens are in the drop zone as, without Marco Ramos, they lost 2-1 at Lille.

Germany - Bundesliga

Almeida scores again

Hugo Almeida added to his goal in midweek with the opener in Werder Bremen’s 6-1 victory over Hannover, who were without Sergio Pinto, on Saturday. Elsewhere, Fernando Meira was sent off as champions Stuttgart went down to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Wolfsburg, for whom Portuguese defender Ricardo Costa was on the score sheet.

Italy - Serie A

Nervy Inter stutter in title race

Inter go into the last round of matches in Italy with just a one-point lead over Roma, following a surprise 2-2 home draw with Siena. Vitor Pele came off the bench for the final five minutes and Maniche was an unused substitute for the Nerazurri, who twice lead at the San Siro. Roma closed the gap with a 2-1 win over Atalanta, as Vitorino Antunes came on in the opening minutes of the second half. On next weekend’s deciding round of fixtures, both teams meet sides fighting for survival, with Roma travelling to Catania and Inter away at Parma.

Fiorentina regained control of fourth place and the final Champions League spot with a 3-1 win over Parma. Manuel da Costa was on the Fiorentina bench, while Fernando Couto sat the match out with suspension. Tiago played 65 minutes of Juventus’ 1-1 home draw with Catania.

Spain - La Liga

Atletico catch Barcelona

Portuguese defender Pepe watched from the stands as champions Real Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by struggling Zaragoza in Spain. Elsewhere, Barcelona went down to a shock 3-2 home defeat to Mallorca, with Deco substituted at half time by Los Cules and Jose Nunes in on the winning side.

Fourth placed Atletico Madrid drew level on points with Barcelona with a narrow 1-0 win over Deportivo at the Vicente Calderon. Simao Sabrosa came off the bench as half time for Los Rojiblancos, while Ze Castro watched from the bench. Miguel played at right-back as Valencia secured their La Liga status with a 5-1 win at Levante. The Andalucian derby saw Sevilla 2-0 winners at Real Betis, with Duda playing the final three minutes. Roberto Beto and Silvestre Varela both started Recreativo Huelva’s 2-0 win at Almeria. Hugo Viana came on at half time in Osasuna’s 2-1 win over Murcia.

Greece

Jose Peseiro’s Panathinaikos will play in the second qualifying round of the Champions League after winning the end of season playoffs with one match to spare. The teams which finished between 2nd-5th entered into a four-team league system, which each team playing each other twice to determine who joins champions Olympiakos in the European Cup next season. Helder Postiga was not involved as Peseiro’s men beat Aris Saloniki 3-1 to move onto twenty points from five matches, giving them a five-point advantage over AEK Athens, who could only manage a 2-2 draw with Panionios.

Poland

The final day of action in Poland saw outgoing champions Zaglebie Lubin finish in 5th place following a 1-0 victory over Korona Kielce. Portuguese duo Tiago Gomes and Rui Miguel were not involved for Zaglebie.

Romania

CFR Cluj ended a memorable season by clinching the Romanian Cup to complete the double. A 2-1 win over Unirea Urziceni brought the trophy to the Transylvanian side, with Portuguese forward Antonio Semedo scoring the winning goal in the 64th minute. Portuguese quintet Tony, captain Cadu, Manuel Jose, Dani and Antonio Semedo all started the final game of the season.

Russia

Dynamo Moscow’s winless run was extended to five matches with a 2-0 defeat to Saturn on Sunday. Danny played the full ninety minutes for Dynamo, who slip down to 7th in the Russian Premier League.

Scotland

Pedro Moutinho played 76 minutes before being replaced as Falkirk beat Iverness CT 2-1 on Saturday in Scotland. Jose Goncalves was an unused substitute in Hearts’ 2-0 defeat to Kilmarnock, while Felipe Morais played the full ninety minutes as Hibernian went down 2-0 at Celtic.

Serbia

Partizan Belgrade followed up their midweek cup success with a 3-1 win over Banat Zrenjanin, which sees them remain three points clear at the top in Serbia. Almani Moreira started and Ednilson came on after 68 minutes for Partizan, who have just three matches left to play in the Super Liga.

Switzerland

FC Basel were crowned champions of Switzerland for the 12th time after beating title rivals Young Boys Bern 2-0 in the crucial top of the table showdown at St. Jakob-Park. Carlitos played the full ninety minutes for Basel, who carried a one-point lead at the top going into the match. Ze Vitor played for St. Gallen in their scoreless draw with Aarau, which means they finish second from bottom and will go into a relegation playoff with the runners up from the Swiss second tier.

Turkey

The Turkish league season drew to a close this weekend, with Ankaraspor, who were without Neca, finishing 10th in the Turkcell Super Lig after a 1-1 home draw with Buraspor. Konyaspor ended the season in 14th place, but Ze Gomes was once again left on the bench as the Green Lightnings lost 2-1 at Kasimpasa.

Ukraine

Ricardo Fernandes’ Metalurg Donetsk dropped down to 11th place in the Ukrainian Premier League with one match remaining after they were held 1-1 at home by Metalist Kharkiv. Metalurg will have a decisive contribution to make on the title race in next week’s final match, as they travel to league leaders Shakhtar Donetsk.

Portuguese attacking midfielder Antonio Semedo has been at the heart of a sensational season for CFR Cluj in Romania. The former Estrela da Amadora player finished the season in style, scoring the winner in the Romanian Cup final to complete the league and cup double for his side.
