Captain and coach sign extended contracts
FC Porto have taken advantage of the break in the domestic calendar to negotiate and announce new extended deals for club captain Lucho Gonzalez and coach Jesualdo Ferreira.
Amidst rumours that Spanish club Atletico Madrid were courting Gonzalez, the Dragons have responded with a one year extension to the player’s contract.
The classy Argentine midfielder signed from River Plate in 2005 until 2010 and was an instant success, finishing as the club’s top scorer as they won the double in 2005/06.
The club felt it was in their best interest to tie down the player for an extra year, and the ex-River Plate man is happy with the deal and feels that it is a good decision for all parties.
“I’m very happy. It’s a huge joy to extend my contract with FC Porto. It means that I’m doing well and working hard, and that the club’s officials are satisfied with me.”
“Players like to feel the confidence and recognition from their club. I feel that the club is aware of my work and this gives me great gratification. I have a strong connection with the club, the players and the fans. I want to help the team grow and achieve everything they wish for.”
Lucho feels that the team are going through a good spell, but senses that there is still room for improvement. The midfielder knows that the club have had some good results this season, but is not willing to count his eggs before they hatch.
“The team is good, but we still have a lot room to grow. We have achieved some big results in the Liga and Champions League, but we have not won anything. The team is growing and is on the right path to achieve its aims.”
Ferreira signs on for extra year
Meanwhile, Porto’s board have shown their appreciation and confidence in coach Jesulado Ferreira’s work so far this season by deciding to renew his contract for one more year.
Ferreira joined Porto at short notice from Boavista during the pre-season following Co Adriaanse’s surprise resignation, signing a one-year agreement with an option for another.
The club this week took up the additional year option to ensure the “Professor” stays with the club until the end of the 2007/08 season.
