Edgar, Guedes and Aguiar eye FC Porto call-up

Loan trio hoping to make mark for champions in 2008/09

Three FC Porto players currently out on loan are all hoping to receive a call from the Dragons in the coming days inviting them to take part in pre-season training. Promising young strikers Edgar and Guedes, and midfeilder Luis Aguiar are all vying to be part of the Portuguese Champions’ squad for next season.

FC Porto striker Edgar wants to play in a blue and white jersey next season, believing he deserves a shot with the Portuguese champions.

The young Brazilian, who is currently on loan to Academica, feels that the time has come to make the leap forward and prove his worth at the next level with Porto.

“FC Porto already know me and what I can do. I would like to have pre-season training with Porto and continue being a part of the group. My objective is to play for Porto next season,” stated the striker.

The beanpole forward was purchased from Beira-Mar in the summer of 2007, signing a one-year loan deal with the Dragons, and the club have an option to keep him for an additional three years if they so choose.

Tough competition

Edgar hopes that this is the case, but may find it difficult with the likes Lisandro Lopez, Ernesto Farias, Rabiola and Adriano all ahead of him in the pecking order, not to mention fellow loanees Renteria and Helder Postiga.

“I’m waiting to speak to FC Porto and accept a renewal for an additional year. I will wait for the season to end because I would like to go on holidays back to Brazil with my situation defined.”

Edgar is not the only player wondering if his future lies with the three time champions. U20 Portugal starlet Guedes, who is on loan to Liga Vitais side Penafiel, would also like to try his hand at the big time, but does not yet know if that will happen.

“I still don’t know anything as I have not spoken to my agent. I would like to represent Porto, without question. They are the national champions and who would not like to play at Porto? It would be a big step in my career,” explained the striker who came through the Dragons’ youth system.

Aguiar to stay in Portugal

Finally, Academica midfielder Luis Aguiar, who is on loan to The Students via FC Porto, is relishing his time in his first year in Portugal and would like to continue his career in the country, whether it be at Academica or FC Porto.

“I want to stay in Portugal,” emphatically stated the Uruguayan who has impressed in the second half of the season. “I want to play and Academica have confidence in me and in what I have done. Nobody at Porto has spoken to me yet.”
