Manuel Fernandes has finally sealed his move to English Premier League side Portsmouth, and fellow Portuguese midfielder Pedro Mendes is delighted to have the former Benfica man at Fratton Park.
Fernandes left Benfica for the Premiership just one day before the transfer deadline, signing a one-season loan deal with Portsmouth. The move was expected to be completed several weeks ago, but concerns over the midfielder’s fitness delayed the transfer.
Current Portsmouth favourite Mendes was positive when asked to describe his early impressions of the 20-year-old: “The best possible. At one time, we were both working on recovery, and we were together for the next few days. I didn’t know him, but now that I have spent some time close to him, I can only say the best,” said Mendes.
Strong partnership
“He is a valuable addition. He is going to fit into the team well. Make no mistake: we are going to get on very well on the pitch as well as off it.”
Meanwhile, Mendes has revealed that he is feeling healthy again after suffering a serious injury during Portsmouth’s match with Manchester City last month. Mendes was knocked unconscious by a forearm smash from City defender Ben Thatcher, and had to spend the night in hospital.
“I’m feeling good. Everything was fine with my scans and the neurologist was happy with everything. I trained yesterday and I trained today and I feel great,” Mendes told Pompey.co.uk
With regard to Pompey’s next game on Saturday, against Wigan, Mendes is hopeful that he will be ready to return to the side: “I hope so. I start full training with the squad with no restrictions next Monday so hopefully I’ll be fit for the Wigan game.”
Pompey’s squad was also strengthened on transfer deadline day with the arrival of Sporting’s Cameroonian winger Roudolphe Douala. The 27-year-old signed a one-year loan deal with the option of making the move permanent at the end of the season.
Veteran former Manchester United forward Andrew Cole, as well as Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar, also moved to Fratton Park before the deadline, boosting the Pompey squad as they aim to maintain the form which has seen them start the season with two wins and a draw from their opening three Premiership games.
