Fernandes scores dream goal on debut

Portsmouth midfielder hits stunning goal in Carling Cup win

Manuel Fernandes

Manuel Fernandes scored a sensational goal on his debut as Portsmouth continued their excellent start to the new season with a Carling Cup victory at League Two side Mansfield.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined Pompey from Benfica on a season-long loan shortly before the transfer deadline, introduced himself to English football with a stunning 30-metre strike just four minutes into his first match with the club. He went on to play the full match for his side.

Matthew Taylor got the second for the Premiership side, who rested Pedro Mendes for the tie, before Mansfield registered a late consolation after a spirited second-half performance from the side from the fourth tier of English football.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Vaz Te played the full 90 minutes as Bolton passed into the next round with a 3-1 win at Walsall. Goals from Kevin Nolan, Ivan Campo and a first goal for record signing Nicolas Anelka saw the Trotters through.

Nuno Valente, who has struggled this season with injury, made his second start of the season in Everton’s 2-1 victory at Peterborough. With the score level at 1-1, Australian midfielder Tim Cahill scored with minutes remaining to send the Toffees through and complete a good night for the Portuguese in the Carling Cup.
