Mendes admits Portugal frustration

Portsmouth midfielder believes he is deserving of a recall

Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes admits that he is frustrated by his lack of opportunities for Portugal in recent years, despite his excellent form at club level.

Mendes was awarded his first cap for his country in November 2002, in a 2-0 friendly victory over Scotland. However, he has added just a single appearance for Portugal since.

Having been a part of the Porto squad that won several major trophies under Jose Mourinho, Mendes has carried his good form into the Premiership, and is a highly-rated player within the English game.

His form for Portsmouth since his January 2006 move has seen many pundits suggest that a recall to Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squad would be just reward for the 27-year-old’s efforts on the south coast.

“Who would not like to play in the national team? Of course I would like to,” said Mendes.

“I know it’s difficult. If what I have done so far is not enough, I sincerely do not know what could be. I was national champion, European champion, I have always played, therefore what I can say is that it is a question of choice.”

“The selector knows exactly where the Portuguese players are, he knows them all, knows where they are playing. It is a question of his choice.”

“I have seen the national team do very good things, in Euro 2004 and the World Cup. I know that there is no need to change things.”

“However, there are friendly games, where the Portuguese manager gives a chance to new players, and my name never comes up. I think I have been a bit overlooked. The players who are in the team are good and playing well, but still, I could play a part in the friendly matches.”
