Carlos Carvalhal appointed new Setubal coach
Former Braga and Beira-Mar coach back in management
Vitoria Setubal have acted quickly in finding a replacement for Carlos Cardoso for next season with the appointment of Carlos Carvalhal as the club’s new head coach.
The announcement was made on Wednesday and ended speculation that the Portuguese was to take over newly promoted Leixoes, who will be coached by Carlos Costa.
The club finished just above the relegation zone having pulled off a win in their final game of the season to ensure they remained in the top flight.
Cardoso had made it clear he was not looking to hold onto the coaching position after the season was over.
Setubal will be Carvalhal’s fourth team in twelve months after coaching Belenenses, Sporting Braga and Beira-Mar in the recent past.
In other club news, Setubal have secured central defender Auri on a two year extension. The 33-year-old was set to be out of a contract at the end of this season, but has committed to the club until 2009.
Auri was happy with the deal stating that he could continue playing for even longer. “I feel good and when you have motivation and happiness to play you do not think about stopping.”
